About The Position

The City of Greeley is seeking a Maintenance Technician or Water Systems Technician I–IV to join the Transmission and Distribution Maintenance team within the Water & Sewer Department. Reporting to the Transmission and Distribution Maintenance Crew Supervisor, this position performs maintenance, inspection, repair, and installation of the City's potable water distribution system to ensure reliable delivery of safe drinking water. Responsibilities include inspecting, maintaining, and repairing pressure reducing valves (PRVs), air vacuum valves, fire hydrants, water valves, and water mains; performing valve exercising; completing Colorado 811 utility locates; and assisting with emergency repairs and routine maintenance throughout the City's transmission and distribution system. The position also installs and repairs water infrastructure, responds to water main breaks and service interruptions, operates a variety of equipment, maintains work records in CityWorks, and assists with inventory management. Work is performed primarily in the field and requires working in confined spaces, excavation trenches, around live traffic, and near heavy equipment while following established safety procedures. This position participates in a rotating on-call schedule and responds to emergency callouts as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license.
  • Basic knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in utility construction and maintenance.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and light-to-heavy equipment.
  • Willingness to participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
  • Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies within 45 minutes when required.
  • Zero (0) to six (6) months of related experience (for Maintenance Technician).
  • Entry-level position requiring the ability to learn water distribution maintenance practices through on-the-job training (for Maintenance Technician).
  • One (1) year of related experience (for Water Systems Technician I).
  • Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 1 Certification (for Water Systems Technician I).
  • Two (2) years of related experience (for Water Systems Technician II).
  • Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 2 Certification (for Water Systems Technician II).
  • Three (3) years of related experience (for Water Systems Technician III).
  • Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 3 Certification (for Water Systems Technician III).
  • Four (4) years of related experience (for Water Systems Technician IV).
  • Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 4 Certification (for Water Systems Technician IV).
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, electrical schematics, technical drawings, and use measuring instruments.
  • Ability to learn and apply job-related procedures through training, instruction, and observation.
  • Ability to follow established safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation as required.
  • Knowledge of Colorado municipal government operations and organizational structures.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills with the ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Outlook and Teams), CityWorks, and the ability to learn new software and technology.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently using sound judgment while contributing effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism, initiative, adaptability, and effectively work with diverse stakeholders in a complex organizational and political environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
  • Experience in water distribution, utilities, public works, construction, sewer, or street maintenance.
  • Mechanical maintenance or repair experience.
  • Experience working safely in or around active roadways and traffic control zones.
  • Knowledge of confined space entry procedures, excavation safety, and trench safety.
  • Experience operating construction or utility maintenance equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, repairs, and maintains pressure reducing valves (PRVs), fire hydrants, air vacuum valves, water valves, and related water distribution system components.
  • Performs utility locates in compliance with Colorado 811 requirements.
  • Conducts maintenance and repairs on water distribution infrastructure and investigates customer complaints related to water quality, including color, taste, and odor.
  • Flushes and cleans water valves and fire hydrant lines as part of the annual preventative maintenance program.
  • Maintains inventory of materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Operates hand tools, power tools, pickup trucks, loaders, dump trucks, and other equipment necessary to complete assigned work.
  • Performs work in confined spaces, excavation trenches, and around heavy equipment while following established safety procedures.
  • Maintains accurate maintenance records, work logs, inventory documentation, and completes work orders in CityWorks.
  • Performs site cleanup following maintenance and construction activities.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation and responds to emergency callouts as required.
