The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Technician IV Crew Lead to serve in the Stormwater Division of Public Works. In this role, you'll supervise and/or actively participate in the work of a crew dedicated to Stormwater maintenance and new construction projects. You'll oversee approximately five field operations staff, along with various division contracts, making sure the right people are assigned to the right tasks at the right time. Day to day, this means directing the work of a diverse team of maintenance workers and technicians across Stormwater projects, and keeping everything moving smoothly and safely. You'll also handle the ordering and tracking of Miss Utility location tickets, coordinate and maintain daily work schedules, and track job progress from start to finish. Regular site inspections will be part of your routine, as you enforce safety standards across the board — including work zone safety. Because this is a leadership role, you'll need strong problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills, both verbal and written. Your leadership style should be grounded in passion, respect, and teamwork, with an eye always on getting projects across the finish line successfully. On the technical side, you should be comfortable using computer software such as the Microsoft Office Suite, along with Stormwater-specific programs like QAlert, WinCan, ArcGIS, and VueWorks. Experience operating combination cleaning vehicles and equipment — including vacuum and jetting systems — is a plus. You'll also need a solid understanding of construction site layout techniques, the ability to read and interpret construction drawings and sketches, and comfort using a builder's level. Prior experience supervising and operating heavy and light construction equipment will serve you well here. This position works closely with other operational and technical personnel across departments to get assigned tasks done. You'll also help support citywide snow removal efforts, and pitch in during special events and emergency situations — which may include some nights and weekends, as needed. A current, valid Virginia Class A CDL is required, or you'll need to obtain one within six months of hire. You'll also need current VDOT flagging and work area protection certifications, or the ability to secure them within that same six-month window. Others duties may be assigned. The City of Roanoke is an Equal Employment Opportunity/AA/M/F/Disability Employer. To elevate the performance of the organization, we are committed to respecting, celebrating, and embracing the collective mixture of differences and similarities between our employees as a rich tapestry. Our behaviors will demonstrate open communication, and we will seek opportunities to learn, recognizing and rewarding actions that promote acceptance while suspending judgment. By doing this, we will foster an inclusive, open work environment that delivers excellent service and creates a more vibrant and inviting community. This is a non exempt position.
