About The Position

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Technician III to serve in the Parks and Recreation Trails and Greenway team. This position participates in the work of a crew of highly skilled Maintenance Technicians and semi-skilled and/or unskilled seasonal Maintenance Workers involved in performing natural and paved trail and greenway maintenance. Activities include but are not limited to trash collection, construction and maintenance of natural surface trails, concrete work, light construction projects, amenity maintenance, tree trimming and removal, mowing, weed-eating, edging, leaf mulching, aerating, fertilizing, and seeding turf and lawn areas. Assists with training new staff. Prepares, supervises and participates in a program to control weeds in landscapes and around amenities as well as control and removal of invasive species. Must have knowledge of and ability to skillfully operate and do routine daily service and maintenance on a wide variety of mowers and equipment, including Toro 5900, Ventrac, zero turn and walk-behind mowers, weed-eaters, edgers, blowers, front-end loader, forklift, backhoe, bobcat, mini-skid steer, chainsaws, trail work tools, and tractor. Performs word processing, record keeping and report preparation on a computer and effectively uses basic office equipment including computers, calculators, copiers, cell phones and mobile radios. Operates heavy and light equipment for snow/ice removal.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Three to five years training and/or experience in trailbuilding and maintenance, landscape and turf maintenance, construction or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements.
  • Registered Technician spraying license.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification in 3A and 3B within 12 months of hiring.
  • Ability to obtain a Fertilizer Applicator certification within 1 year of hiring.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to skillfully operate and do routine daily service and maintenance on a wide variety of mowers and equipment, including Toro 5900, Ventrac, zero turn and walk-behind mowers, weed-eaters, edgers, blowers, front-end loader, forklift, backhoe, bobcat, mini-skid steer, chainsaws, trail work tools, and tractor.
  • Proficiency in word processing, record keeping and report preparation on a computer.
  • Effectively uses basic office equipment including computers, calculators, copiers, cell phones and mobile radios.
  • Operates heavy and light equipment for snow/ice removal.
  • Operates tractor trailer, street sweeper, bulldozer, heavy front-end loader, crane and chipper, excavator, large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces, street and construction repair.
  • Inspects new and existing stormwater infrastructure using an onboard computer system to remotely operate a camera and tractor system and overlay information on screen, to be recorded on a laptop for later printing and importing into an asset management database.
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services a wide variety of medium and heavy automotive and specialized equipment including diesel or gasoline engine equipment, air compressors, pump apparatus and aerial truck hydraulic systems.
  • Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding.
  • Requisitions parts and materials used in the repair of motor equipment.
  • Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment (i.e. water cooler, fist aid kit, safety flares, etc).
  • Performs journey-level trades work in one of the following areas: carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and/or welding.
  • Performs carpentry work, building cabinets, benches, barricades, and other items.
  • Trains and instructs subordinates.
  • Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to insure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law.
  • Follows established safety procedures.
  • May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties.
