About The Position

RUSTIC BAKERY is seeking experienced Maintenance Technicians (II & III) for their Petaluma facility. These journey-level professionals are responsible for the independent diagnosis, repair, and ongoing reliability of bakery production equipment and facility systems. The roles involve preventive and corrective maintenance, vendor coordination, parts procurement, and mentoring junior staff. The Maintenance Technician II operates independently across a broad range of mechanical and electrical systems, ensuring equipment uptime and documentation standards. The Maintenance Technician III is the facility's foremost technical expert with specialized proficiency in advanced controls, PLC programming, robotics, and automation systems, resolving complex failures, leading capital projects, and driving equipment reliability strategy.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 3–5 years of hands-on maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably food or bakery production (Technician II).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems; working knowledge of motors, VFDs, pneumatics, and control systems (Technician II).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and equipment manuals independently (Technician II).
  • Experience with CMMS software for work order management and documentation (Technician II).
  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively in a fast-paced production environment (Technician II).
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with vendors, contractors, and internal teams (Technician II).
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work at heights, and perform tasks in warm and physically demanding conditions.
  • 10+ years of progressive maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment, with significant experience in food or bakery production preferred (Technician III).
  • Advanced PLC programming and troubleshooting expertise required; proficiency with Allen-Bradley (Rockwell), Siemens, or equivalent platforms; experience with multiple platforms preferred (Technician III).
  • Demonstrated experience with electronic controls diagnosis and repair, including servo systems, VFDs, motion control, and instrumentation at the component level (Technician III).
  • Hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting industrial robotic systems; familiarity with major robot brands (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Yaskawa, or equivalent) preferred (Technician III).
  • Working knowledge of advanced diagnostic tools including data loggers, thermal imaging cameras, vibration analyzers, and power quality meters (Technician III).
  • Hands-on fabrication skills including MIG/TIG welding, cutting, and basic machining; ability to read and produce mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and controls documentation (Technician III).
  • Proven experience contributing to capital projects, equipment installations, or facility automation upgrades (Technician III).
  • Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills; experience with RCA methodologies (5-Why, Fishbone, FMEA, etc.) (Technician III).
  • Experience with CMMS platforms for PM program management, equipment history tracking, and reliability reporting (Technician III).
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical issues clearly and develop the skills of less experienced team members (Technician III).

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree or completion of a formal apprenticeship or trade program in industrial maintenance, electrical, or mechanical fields preferred (Technician II).
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in industrial technology, electrical engineering technology, mechatronics, robotics, or a related field strongly preferred (Technician III).

Responsibilities

  • Independently diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical failures on bakery production equipment including mixers, dividers, molders, ovens, proofers, slicers, and packaging machinery.
  • Execute and oversee preventive maintenance schedules, ensuring tasks are completed accurately, on time, and documented in the CMMS.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues using schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and diagnostic tools; identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with equipment vendors and service contractors for specialized repairs, warranty work, and technical support; manage vendor access and on-site activity.
  • Identify, source, and request parts and supplies; maintain accurate records of parts used and current inventory levels to minimize downtime.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of Maintenance Technician I staff, providing guidance on procedures, safety, and best practices.
  • Participate in equipment improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance reliability, reduce waste, and improve maintenance efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with all food safety, GMP, OSHA, and company safety standards during all maintenance activities.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns during production hours and work to restore operations with minimal disruption.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate work order records, equipment histories, and parts documentation.
  • Serve as the highest-level technical resource for the most complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, and controls-related failures (Technician III).
  • Program, configure, modify, and troubleshoot PLC systems, HMI interfaces, and distributed control systems (DCS); develop and maintain PLC program libraries, documentation, and version control practices (Technician III).
  • Diagnose and repair electronic control systems including servo drives, variable frequency drives (VFDs), motion controllers, sensors, vision systems, and process instrumentation at the component level (Technician III).
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair robotic systems used in bakery production and packaging operations; coordinate with robot OEMs and integrators for advanced support, program updates, and system modifications (Technician III).
  • Interpret complex schematics, ladder logic, and network communication diagrams to perform advanced electrical troubleshooting (Technician III).
  • Design, fabricate, and modify mechanical components, fixtures, guards, and structural supports using welding, machining, and metal fabrication techniques (Technician III).
  • Act as lead technician in the execution of capital improvement and equipment installation projects, including contractor coordination, commissioning, startup, and as-built documentation (Technician III).
  • Develop and continuously refine preventive and predictive maintenance programs using reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) principles, CMMS data, and condition-monitoring techniques (Technician III).
  • Conduct advanced root cause analysis (RCA) on chronic or high-impact equipment failures; implement sustainable corrective actions and track measurable outcomes (Technician III).
  • Provide technical mentorship and hands-on training to Technician I and II staff in controls, electronics, and advanced troubleshooting methods (Technician III).
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, quality, and food safety teams on equipment changes, automation upgrades, new product introductions, and facility modifications (Technician III).
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, automation solutions, and maintenance tools to support continuous improvement in reliability, efficiency, and operating cost (Technician III).
  • Maintain thorough documentation of PLC programs, electrical and controls as-builts, robot programs, fabrication drawings, project records, and equipment modification histories (Technician III).
  • Ensure all work meets applicable food safety, GMP, OSHA, NEC, and company safety and regulatory requirements (Technician III).
