About The Position

To work as part of the Maintenance team to ensure the top tier COMAH site is operating in a safe and productive manner and maintain and improve undertaking all duties in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and working to all relevant standards. The EC&I maintenance technician is responsible for the assembly, installation, maintenance, testing and fault diagnosis, repair and disassembly of a wide range of electrical plant and associated components. Typical equipment includes power generation and distribution systems (Single phase/three phase LV), Earthing systems, switch panels, transformers, motors, generators lighting systems, and circuit protection devices (Fuses, MCBs, Relays, RCDs, thermal overloads). Responsible for diagnosing the causes of electrical or electromechanical malfunctions or failures of operational equipment in a prompt and efficient manner. They must be able to interpret maintenance specifications, engineering drawings and wiring diagrams to achieve many of their day-to-day objectives. Participation on a callout rota is essential as the chemical site typically requires 24/7/365 coverage to ensure the safe, continuous operation of high-hazard processes and to address urgent breakdowns. The postholder is expected to be flexible in their approach to duties in accordance with the requirements of the business.

Requirements

  • Relevant competencies to install, maintain, test, diagnose faults, and disassemble electrical plant and associated components to the required standard while adhering to health, safety, and environmental regulations and safe working practices, considering environmental and sustainability aspects.
  • Understanding of relevant legislative, regulatory, and local requirements, procedures, and safe working practices, including reporting lines and procedures.
  • Understanding of preparation and reinstatement requirements for work areas, materials, and equipment, and the consequences of incorrect actions.
  • Ability to read and interpret relevant engineering drawings, specifications, quality standards, and equipment manuals.
  • Ability to follow work instructions, plans, and schedules.
  • Understanding of which tools and equipment to use and when, and adherence to relevant training, methods, techniques, and quality control and safety procedures.
  • Understanding of responsibilities for ensuring the care and security of tools and equipment.
  • Understanding and working in accordance with mandatory Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements.
  • Understanding types of defects and faults, how to identify them, and the appropriate action to take.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work inclusively.
  • Ability to work within a risk control strategy.
  • Ability to complete actions and documents accurately and honestly.

Nice To Haves

  • Time-Served Apprenticeship with an NVQ Level 3 in Engineering Maintenance, Electrical Engineering, or Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician.
  • HNC/HND, ONC, or similar technical certificates in Electrical Engineering.
  • City & Guilds 2391 (or equivalent) for initial and periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations.
  • Comp Ex (Units 01-04) for working safely in potentially explosive atmospheres.
  • Current BS 7671 certification (18th Edition Wiring Regulations).

Responsibilities

  • Assembly, installation, maintenance, testing, fault diagnosis, repair, and disassembly of electrical plant and associated components.
  • Interpreting maintenance specifications, engineering drawings, and wiring diagrams.
  • Diagnosing causes of electrical or electromechanical malfunctions or failures of operational equipment.
  • Participating on a callout rota for 24/7/365 coverage.
  • Performing scheduled planned preventative maintenance.
  • Putting forward suggestions and developing modification requests to improve plant/equipment efficiency/safety.
  • Ensuring 'as built' drawings are updated and circulated as per organizational policy.
  • Handling a range of digital information, technology, and equipment.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrating team working skills.
  • Working within an overall risk control strategy.
