About The Position

Join us at The Wilds and help maintain one of the most unique conservation parks in the country through skilled craftsmanship and daily upkeep. The Maintenance Team Member supports daily facility repairs, construction projects, grounds upkeep, and equipment maintenance to ensure safe and well-functioning operations across The Wilds. The role also assists with special events, work orders, and cross‑department maintenance needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Carpentry skills.
  • Plumbing skills.
  • Strong electrical skills.
  • Experience operating tools, machinery, and maintenance equipment safely.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on structures, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost‑effective manner and without direct supervision.
  • General knowledge of facility maintenance best practices, including safety procedures for tools, ladders, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Ability to read, follow, and interpret basic work orders or diagrams.
  • Positive, professional attitude.
  • Strong independent decision‑making and problem‑solving skills.
  • Communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service and uphold guest service standards when interacting with visitors or staff.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with all Wilds/Zoo team members.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and adapt to changing operational needs.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Possession of a valid state‑issued driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Successfully complete a pre‑employment drug screening and criminal background check.
  • Subject to the Drug‑Free Workplace Policy, BMV check, and all compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Performs minor repair work on structures.
  • Constructs, modifies, or repairs wooden fencing, benches, decks, and boardwalks.
  • Constructs portable cages and repairs existing portable cages.
  • Maintains and repairs equipment and tools.
  • Performs basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry tasks within skill scope.
  • Assists with routine inspections of facilities, structures, and work areas to identify maintenance needs.
  • Constructs special items such as signs, recognition boards, education projects, and concession operations materials.
  • Paints signs and gates on a scheduled basis (from old description).
  • Provides support and assistance for activities related to special events.
  • Assists other facilities staff when required.
  • Assists with installation or setup of temporary structures, barriers, and event-related buildouts.
  • Mowing, weed eating, brush hogging as needed.
  • Performs daily trash removal and proper disposal
  • Clears walkways, paths, and guest areas of debris for safety and accessibility.
  • Supports routine campsite or facility-area upkeep when required.
  • Operates utility vehicles, equipment, and machinery safely and responsibly.
  • Uses two‑way radios for clear communication with staff and management.
  • Responds to maintenance requests and work orders in a timely and professional manner.
  • Carry out other related duties assigned by the supervisor to support departmental goals and daily operations.
  • Assures safety of self, staff, animals, and guests through participation in safety training; compliance with operating procedures; proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Strives to further the mission of the organization and supports The Wilds, the Zoo, Zoombezi Bay, and Safari Golf Club.
  • Follows all safety protocols related to chemical handling, lockout/tagout, ladder use, and equipment operation.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work environment and storage areas.
  • Reports hazards, facility damage, or unsafe conditions promptly to management.
