As a Fishing Attendant at The Wilds, you’ll create memorable experiences for visitors, assist with fishing excursions, and serve as an ambassador for our conservation mission. The Fishing Team Member Lead oversees daily fishing operations, provides guidance to team members, coordinates guest reservations, and ensures safe, high-quality experiences on all excursions. This role is responsible for equipment readiness, guest safety, and maintaining compliance with Wilds policies and environmental standards

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Possession of a valid state issued driver’s license.
  • Subject to a criminal background check and BMV review.
  • Subject to The Wilds’ Drug Free Workplace Policy.
  • Experience in public speaking, interpretation, programming, or guest services preferred.
  • Excellent guest service skills with a positive and professional attitude.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain cooperative working relationships with team members and guests.
  • Ability to walk long distances, including inclines, while assisting guests with fishing equipment.
  • Comfortable operating a two-way radio for communication.
  • Capable of making responsible decisions and adapting to rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and maintain organization.
  • Basic water safety awareness and comfort working around lakes, boats, and docks.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry fishing gear or equipment (up to 25–30 lbs).
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • College coursework in biology, education, interpretation, wildlife management, ecology, or related fields preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
  • Previous experience in a leadership or lead-support role preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a thorough understanding of The Wilds’ conservation initiatives and deliver engaging, informative interactions with visitors.
  • Greet guests, provide essential information, and verify all required documentation such as liability forms and Ohio Fishing Licenses.
  • Act as a professional representative of The Wilds at all times through conduct, communication, and appearance.
  • Monitor online reservations, contact guests in advance, set tour expectations, and schedule guides for each booking.
  • Coordinate special requests and ensure accommodations are communicated clearly to the team.
  • Provide direction and support to Fishing Team Members during daily operations.
  • Help ensure adequate staffing, coverage, and workflow during busy operational periods.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for guest issues requiring leadership support and escalate concerns to management when needed.
  • Assist guests with fishing equipment, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience.
  • Prepare and stage proper fishing equipment and boats prior to excursions.
  • Transport visitors safely through guest and animal areas during fishing safaris.
  • Perform daily vehicle inspections and ensure vehicles remain clean and guest-ready.
  • Inspect fishing gear (rods, reels, bait buckets, life jackets) daily for safety and functionality.
  • Provide safety briefings prior to excursions, including water safety, equipment handling, and wildlife awareness.
  • Ensure life jackets and safety equipment are properly fitted and used according to policy.
  • Assist guests in safely boarding/exiting boats or shoreline areas.
  • Monitor weather conditions throughout operating hours and make operational decisions regarding unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain safety and compliance by adhering to all operational protocols and procedures.
  • Operate a two-way radio for communication and coordination.
  • Ensure bait and tackle are stored, handled, and disposed of per environmental guidelines.
  • Report equipment issues, safety hazards, or guest concerns promptly.
  • Implement sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Provide on-the-job guidance and training for new Fishing Team Members related to safety, procedures, and guest service expectations.
  • Assist in light housekeeping and groundskeeping tasks to maintain a clean and inviting environment.
  • Support The Wilds, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, and Safari Golf Club by upholding their mission and values.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
