The Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for ensuring that the designated department follows the facility maintenance plan and for executing a program of continual growth and development for the maintenance team. This role involves planning, organizing, and overseeing maintenance employees who maintain, service, and repair mechanical equipment in a designated area. The Superintendent ensures that facility maintenance activities and work orders are completed in a timely manner, creates and maintains records and reports, and works closely with production to maximize the effectiveness of projects and preventative maintenance (PMs). They communicate daily with the Plant Engineer to discuss matters and take direction, and maintain production equipment to meet organization standards, ensuring machinery performs at its highest possible standard. This role also involves monitoring and controlling downtime, providing solutions to reduce it, and offering technical guidance, direction, and specifications for supplies, parts, equipment, and contractor services. Additionally, the Superintendent ensures proper instruction and training of the maintenance crew in methods, procedures, equipment usage, preventative maintenance, systems maintenance and repair, and safety protocols. They maintain a cross-trained maintenance crew capable of stepping into different roles to ensure crewing changes do not impact production needs, ensure scheduled maintenance is completed, and coordinate projects with sub-contractors. Establishing and implementing preventive maintenance programs and procedures, and requisitioning tools, equipment, and supplies are also key duties. The role also focuses on promoting and driving succession development within their areas of responsibility.
