About The Position

The Maintenance Superintendent at JBS USA in Ottumwa is responsible for coordinating supervisor responsibilities and overseeing the general maintenance of electrical, mechanical, and technical, cutting, and packaging equipment. This role also administers the Safety program. The Superintendent reviews daily production reports, identifies and addresses downtime causes, processes maintenance downtime reports, and assigns work orders to maintenance supervisors. They manage the department budget, conduct pre-operational inspections, and facilitate daily meetings with maintenance supervisors. The position provides technical assistance, reviews purchase requisitions, and is involved in the hiring process for supervisor and hourly maintenance personnel. Key responsibilities include delegating training, scheduling preventative maintenance, monitoring equipment, prioritizing work orders, and promoting safety. The role requires a strong understanding of OSHA, root cause analysis skills, and the ability to lead teams. The Superintendent also reviews and plans PM activities, handles non-emergency work orders, develops integrated maintenance schedules, and works with facility managers on resource allocation. They are responsible for creating PMs for new equipment and ordering parts.

Requirements

  • Minimum of high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Previous hourly maintenance and maintenance supervisor experience needed.
  • Mechanical inclination and knowledge of job specifications required.
  • Ability to perform general mathematical calculations.
  • Electrical knowledge essential.
  • Be able to communicate verbally and in written form in English.
  • Computer proficient i.e. Microsoft word, excel, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of SAP systems and related systems/Software.
  • Strong knowledge of work management processes, labor estimating and good working knowledge of plant process equipment.
  • Must be flexible and responsive to company needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to be proactive in problem solving and lead the resolution of equipment projects.
  • Organizational Skills along with the ability of independent decision making.
  • Ability to perform general mathematical calculations.
  • Strong understanding of skilled crafts such as: HVAC, Carpentry, Electricity, Mechanical, Pneumatics, Hydraulics, Plumbing, and the ability to read schematics-blue prints.
  • Previous mechanical and related experience required.
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Work 40+ hours per week in all areas of the plant.

  • Technical schooling with mechanical or electrical emphasis helpful.
  • Technical schooling in robotics and electronics highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates supervisor responsibilities and oversees the general maintenance of electrical, mechanical, and technical, cutting, and packaging equipment.
  • Administers the Safety program.
  • Reviews make sheet (i.e. production report details, absenteeism, downtime, etc.) from previous day’s production.
  • Identifies downtime information from downtime sheet by separating into mechanical operational and sales groups.
  • Responsible for correcting or facilitating correctible measures when downtime results from mechanical or technical defects.
  • Processes maintenance downtime report for corporate and plant management.
  • Assigns work orders or special projects to maintenance supervisors.
  • Maintains department budget within specified guidelines.
  • Conducts pre-operational inspection of Plant Equipment and handles maintenance concerns of Production.
  • Supervisors to make sure operation begins as scheduled.
  • Conducts daily Maintenance Supervisor meeting to review work order assignments and address department issues.
  • Provides technical, mechanical, and/or electrical assistance throughout shift.
  • Reviews maintenance purchase requisitions, submits approval or disapproval.
  • Interviews and hires candidates for supervisor or general foreman positions.
  • Oversees the hiring of hourly maintenance personnel.
  • Delegates training procedures to supervisors.
  • Schedule and maintain preventative maintenance.
  • Monitor all production areas to ensure proper functioning of equipment and machinery.
  • Prioritize work orders and schedule mechanics according to urgency and necessity of orders in SAP.
  • Promote and encourage safety in all aspects of maintenance.
  • Add/delete equipment in SAP to keep data up to date.
  • Attend meetings as scheduled, staff, USDA, or any called.
  • Review, plan, and schedule all recurring PM activities.
  • Receive and review all non-emergency work orders from requesting departments.
  • Review and screen all work orders to ensure they are filled out properly with the proper information for the request.
  • Develop an integrated maintenance work schedule for the maintenance supervisors (including PM, PDM, and non-emergency work orders).
  • Work with facility managers to properly prioritize work and ensure proper resources allocation.
  • Identify changes needed to the PM program.
  • Create PM for new equipment implemented into the plant’s process.
  • Order parts and assigns work orders or special projects to maintenance employees.
  • Tends to other duties as needed.
