About The Position

The Open Pit Maintenance Superintendent provides leadership, direction, and oversight for all mobile maintenance activities in the open pit. This role is accountable for ensuring that the heavy‑equipment fleet is maintained safely, efficiently, and reliably to meet production targets. The Superintendent drives workforce performance, maintenance execution, planning/scheduling discipline, and continuous improvement, while ensuring compliance with site policies and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in mobile equipment maintenance within mining or heavy industry.
  • 3+ years in a supervisory or superintendent role.
  • Strong technical knowledge of large mining equipment (CAT, Komatsu, Liebherr, P&H, Sandvik, etc.).
  • Proven experience managing teams in a fast‑paced, production‑critical environment.
  • Strong understanding of work management processes and planning/scheduling.
  • Effective leadership, communication, and conflict‑resolution skills.
  • Proficiency with SAP PM or similar maintenance management system.

Nice To Haves

  • Trades certification or technical diploma/degree in mechanical or electrical field.
  • Experience with reliability tools (RCA, FMEA, condition monitoring).
  • Experience working with dispatch/fleet management systems
  • Project or shutdown planning experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of supervisors, planners, trades, apprentices, and contractors.
  • Set clear expectations for safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Ensure adequate manpower coverage and manage shift rotations, vacation, and OT.
  • Build a strong culture of accountability, communication, and teamwork.
  • Support training, development, and competency progression for all team members.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety standards, legislation, and company procedures.
  • Drive hazard identification, JHAs, safe work permits, and field verifications.
  • Lead incident investigations and corrective actions.
  • Identify high‑risk tasks and implement controls to eliminate or mitigate risks.
  • Oversee execution of PM, corrective, and breakdown maintenance on haul trucks, loaders, dozers, graders, drills, and support equipment.
  • Ensure all work orders are completed to standard with proper documentation.
  • Enforce work quality standards and ensure equipment is returned to production ready for safe operation.
  • Support supervisors in resolving technical issues and prioritizing daily work.
  • Work closely with planners, reliability, operations, and dispatch to build a weekly schedule that aligns with production goals.
  • Ensure that scheduled work is fully prepared (“Ready‑to‑Work”) with labor, parts, and tooling before execution.
  • Lead weekly and daily maintenance meetings with cross‑functional teams.
  • Drive adherence to the work management process: Notification → Planning → Scheduling → Execution → Closeout.
  • Collaborate with Reliability Engineering to analyze trends, chronic issues, and failure modes.
  • Support development of improved PM strategies, task lists, and BOM accuracy.
  • Evaluate fleet condition, major component performance, and downtime drivers.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to increase availability and reduce maintenance cost.
  • Manage maintenance budgets for labor, materials, contractors, and major repairs.
  • Review planned vs. actual spending monthly and take corrective actions where needed.
  • Ensure proper SAP cost coding, work order accuracy, and TECO discipline.
  • Optimize use of contractors and overtime to control spending without compromising safety or uptime.
  • Act as the primary liaison between Maintenance and Open Pit Operations.
  • Communicate equipment status, work progress, delays, and risks in real time.
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain to ensure parts availability and address procurement delays.
  • Collaborate with Training, Safety, and Engineering departments as needed.
