The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. Performs advanced (senior-level) restoration, renovation, building maintenance and construction work in a designated skilled trade. Work involves renovation, restoration, alteration, making inspections, adjustments, installations, maintaining and repairing buildings, utility systems, and stationary equipment, dependent on the trade and operating motorized equipment, requisitioning material and supplies; and maintaining records. Process paperwork related to work orders, projects and material requisitions. Performs training, assigns, and/or prioritizes the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the repair, maintenance, and operations of buildings, building systems and grounds.
  • Maintains, assembles, installs, repairs, all doors, door locks and door hardware, including all the gates for the permeator fencing. May work with outside vendors when applicable
  • Maintains, tests, troubleshoots and repair all components associated with the fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems.
  • May work with outside vendors when applicable
  • Knowledge of industrial safety, fire and safety regulations.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment
  • Skill in preventative maintenance and inspections of buildings and building systems.
  • Ability to perform maintenance, to follow instructions, estimate materials; to apply proper methods, techniques And procedures in the maintenance and repair of buildings, building and utility systems.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, or sketches.
  • Ability to organize preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and other facility staff.

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent, supplemented by vocational training in a designated trade, is generally preferred.

  • Must possess valid TX driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date.

Nice To Haves

  • Plumbing license preferred (minimum journeyman) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. May serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required to meet operational needs of the facility.
  • Performs inspections, adjustments, maintenance and repair work in accordance with recognized codes and standards on building systems for various trades such as associated with the assembly, installation, repairs, of doors, door locks and door hardware, including all the gates for the perimeter fencing. Maintains, tests, troubleshoots and repairs all components associated with the fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems, carpentry, painting and electrical, to ensure proper maintenance and repair. Demonstrates the use of hand tools and/or equipment while performing repairs or inspections. Evaluates work to be performed and determines the best method for performing maintenance and repair work. (10%)
  • Performs repairs and renovations to modernize a building, building system or adapt it to new uses. Designs projects to conform to applicable codes and standards. Identifies necessary information such as time and physical location. Identifies necessary materials and assembly details. Ensures that the necessary tools and manpower are available to perform the work. Makes in-process inspections to ensure the job is being done properly. (10%)
  • Selects appropriate material to replace and repair building or building systems. Recognizes failures in the operation of the equipment. Correctly identifies the cause of the system or equipment failure and identifies the necessary corrective action. (10%)
  • Acts as a lead worker on construction, maintenance, or repair projects. Establishes work schedules, assigns appropriate staff, and oversees repairs or renovations needed. (10%)
  • Maintains safe and uninterrupted services to campus operations and programs systems. Recognizes improper operation and deterioration of the system. Establishes a need for repairs and adjustments. (10%)
  • Uses hand tools, power tools, and tests safety equipment as necessary. (5%)
  • Accurately processes paperwork and maintains records on work orders, projects and material requisitions. (5%)
  • Operates machinery such as backhoes, forklifts, etc. as necessary. Demonstrates the use of machinery as needed. (5%)
  • Trains others on the proper procedures and methods for repairs or inspections. Maintains training records for staff (10%)
  • Operates and maintains motorized vehicles and equipment. (5%)
  • Provides inspections on work performed by contractors to ensure contract compliance. (5%)
  • Completes requisitions for materials and equipment, maintains records of the materials used, calculates the amount of materials needed and the cost of labor, and orders parts and supplies needed to complete work orders. (5%)
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
