About The Position

This is a senior-level position in the Field Operations Division. The role involves operating heavy equipment, driving trucks/vans for crew and equipment transport, supervising work crews, and ensuring proper maintenance and servicing of heavy equipment. The employee will assist the supervisor and oversee the zone in their absence. Specific duties vary based on assignment: Field Operations includes supervising valving down and tapping of water and force mains, overseeing installations, and investigating system problems. Meter Shop involves assisting with daily activities, loading/unloading equipment, supervising meter readers, and potentially reading meters with quality control. Plants/Sewer Lift involves leading work teams, planning construction and facility needs, implementing operational procedures, troubleshooting, performing preventive and reactive maintenance, picking up parts, installing/repairing components, inspecting equipment, cleaning basins, greasing pumps, replacing filters, operating radios, completing work orders, maintaining housekeeping standards, understanding electrical safety, operating various equipment, repairing structures, requisitioning parts, ensuring safety compliance, documenting work orders and evaluations, interacting with customers, maintaining buildings/grounds, fueling pumps, managing tool inventory, using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), initiating work orders, maintaining job safety standards, complying with vehicle safety rules, training new team members, attending training classes, and being subject to on-call duty 24/7. All Maintenance Specialist III's must be able to perform tasks of a Maintenance Specialist I or II.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid State Vehicle Operator's License with class applicable to assigned position.
  • Associates Degree or two year vocational degree from an accredited college in mechanical, electrical, or welding and two years of experience in operations and/or maintenance OR four (4) or more years experience as a Maintenance Specialist II or in industrial/environmental operations and/or maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment, such as backhoes and front end loaders.
  • Drive trucks/vans to transport crews and haul equipment to work sites.
  • Supervise work crews at all sites.
  • Ensure heavy equipment is properly maintained and serviced.
  • Assist the supervisor as required and oversee the zone in the supervisor's absence.
  • Supervise and plan workloads for wash truck, dump truck, and hydrant inspection personnel.
  • Provide training on proper maintenance and repair of sewer and water mains, hydrants, manholes, etc.
  • Investigate system problems and develop corrective actions.
  • Oversee the valving down and tapping of water and force mains in the zone.
  • Oversee the installation of valves, hydrants, air relief valves, fittings, and other appurtenances.
  • Assist the supervisor with planning of daily activities, loading and unloading of equipment and materials for Meter Shop assignment.
  • Supervise meter readers assigned to them and may be required to read meters using a hand held processor.
  • Perform quality control for accurate and consistent reading of meters.
  • Lead and direct work teams for Plants/Sewer Lift assignment.
  • Plan for construction projects and prepare plans for future facility needs.
  • Implement improved operational and mechanical procedures.
  • Troubleshoot operational and mechanical issues.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on all assigned equipment.
  • Perform reactive maintenance as required.
  • Pick up equipment parts from vendors.
  • Install, repair, or replace functional parts and components.
  • Routinely inspect plant equipment and facilities.
  • Wash down and clean out basins as required.
  • Add grease and oil to pumps.
  • Replace air filters.
  • Operate radio.
  • Complete work orders and basic forms.
  • Perform and maintain housekeeping standards.
  • Understand basic electrical safety.
  • Operate forklift, weed-eater, and tractor/bush hog.
  • Repair fences and wooden structures.
  • Requisition parts and supplies.
  • Ensure that work teams observe all safety requirements.
  • Complete or assist in documenting work orders, basic forms, and employee evaluations.
  • Interact with customers.
  • Responsible for maintenance of buildings and grounds.
  • Responsible for fueling rental pumps.
  • Responsible for maintaining inventory of assigned tools & equipment, as well as proper operation, care and security of assigned items.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and use of computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and related documentation procedures.
  • Initiate work orders.
  • Maintain job safety standards (personal protection equipment, etc.).
  • Comply with City of Shreveport vehicle safety rules.
  • Train new team members on safe work practices.
  • Regularly attend required safety, job-related, and certification training classes as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
