The Tollway is a user-fee system – no state or federal tax dollars are used to support maintenance and operations. Operations are funded by toll and concession revenues. Under the leadership of the Board of Directors and Executive Staff, the Tollway is committed to achieving the following goals: increase collaboration with regional transportation and planning agencies, promote the regional economy, maintain financial integrity, foster environmental responsibility and sustainability, maintain the safety and efficiency of the Tollway system, further transparency and accountability, enhance customer service, and maintain public trust. In support of this vision, the Maintenance Section Manager manages one of eleven maintenance buildings strategically placed on the 294 miles of toll highway comprising the Authority’s system. Directs the Roadway Maintenance staff in numerous work activities to provide routine, scheduled and emergency maintenance to ensure the safe and convenient passage for customers.

Requirements

  • High-school graduate or equivalent is required.
  • Good written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Proven knowledge & ability in snow & ice control operations is required.
  • The incumbent should have knowledge of and experience in snow and ice removal operations.
  • Experienced in roadway and appurtenant repair operations, management operations and budgeting and personnel (union environment) is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills are required.
  • Incumbent should be self-motivated and be able to motivate subordinates.
  • The incumbent will be required to pass a written examination in order to qualify for an interview.
  • Must also have a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements of air brakes, combination vehicles, and tank truck at the time of application.

  • Experience with computerized Maintenance Management Systems and Inventory Control Procedures is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Surveys, inspects and evaluates all elements of the roadway and appurtenances and completes maintenance activities to preserve the integrity of the System.
  • Maintains a high level of communication with Supervisors and Maintenance and Traffic Division Management Staff to ensure that Roadway Maintenance needs are met.
  • Is available 24 x 7 to respond to incidents in their assigned maintenance section and restore roadway operation to efficient and safe conditions.
  • Monitors Authority radio traffic at work to ensure awareness of roadway operations and incidents pertinent to the safety of motorists.
  • Organizes, directs, and accomplishes maintenance activities through manpower, materials, and equipment to preserve the integrity of the Authority’s roadway infrastructure.
  • Develops subordinates through training and cross training on maintenance activities, providing exposure to new and increasingly responsible activities and procedures.
  • Attends weekly construction coordination meetings for any construction projects within the maintenance section and provides input regarding maintenance of traffic, traffic control and incident response.
  • Coordinates incident responses within the Maintenance Section with local fire departments that serve the Maintenance Section.
  • Monitors all construction work zones within Maintenance Section on a daily basis to ensure compliance with all signing, lane closure, and traffic control procedures.
  • Incumbent is required to respond to all incidents involving lane blockage 24 x 7 to ensure that lane blockage is cleared in a timely manner.
  • Directs Snow and Ice Control Operation to ensure that the existence of inclement weather does not reduce safety or free flow of people, goods and services through the assigned Maintenance Section.
  • Required to work overnight shifts to supervise the safe completion of repair work on the road that cannot be completed during daytime / rush hour periods, thus reducing / eliminating traffic congestion during peak travel times.
  • Prepares and conducts annual performance evaluations for subordinate staff.
