About The Position

The City of Savage is seeking qualified candidates to fill two full-time, year-round Maintenance Operator positions in the Streets Division of the Public Works Department. These roles involve maintaining the City's streets and other infrastructure for the safe use of residents and the public. The regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with the requirement to respond to call-ins on evenings, weekends, and holidays for snow and ice operations as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least three years of work experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, bridges, trails or parking lots; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work.
  • Valid Minnesota Class B license at time of application.
  • Clean driving record and DOT drug-testing history.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Minnesota Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with tanker endorsement and no restriction on air breaks, within one year of hire and for duration of employment.
  • Previous experience in a municipal public works operation.
  • Public Works Certificate from the MN Chapter of the APWA, or similar specialized education or training.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work of City streets, trails, and other infrastructure.
  • Operate both light and heavy equipment, small engine equipment and a variety of tools to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Plow and haul snow and perform salt, sand, and de-icing operations using single axle and tandem axle trucks, front end loaders, pickups, skid steers and other equipment.
  • Respond promptly to call-ins and work evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary due to weather conditions or other emergency situations.
  • Operate street sweeper.
  • Patch potholes, install and repair signs and barricades; manually dig holes and trenches.
  • Safely operate, maintain, and perform field repairs on commercial-grade chainsaws to clear brush, remove fallen trees, and maintain public right-of-ways in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Work cooperatively with other divisions and departments in the maintenance of City infrastructure and facilities and the delivery of public works services.
  • Follow and promote safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintain daily record of work performed.
  • Occasionally provide on-the-job training or oversight for seasonal employees.

Benefits

  • Full 2026 Pay Scale: $31.66 to $41.70 per hour.
  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $31.66 to $34.24 per hour.
