About The Position

This is a Maintenance Mechanic - Plumbing position with the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) located at Tacachale in Gainesville, FL. APD works in partnership with local communities to support people with developmental disabilities in living, learning, and working in their communities. The Agency serves people with spina bifida, autism, Down syndrome, children ages 3-5 at high risk of developmental disabilities, cerebral palsy, Prader-Willi syndrome, Phelan-McDermid syndrome, and intellectual disabilities. This role is part of the TACACHALE team that impacts the lives of developmentally disabled adults.

Requirements

  • A valid Florida Driver’s License. Corrective Lenses Restricted license are acceptable provided the driver wears the corrective lenses while operating a state vehicle.
  • Must be willing to perform essential services before, during, and after an emergency.
  • Must be willing to work beyond the normal work schedule to maintain minimum coverage levels and meet the needs of the Agency.
  • Must be able to climb a ladder and/or work from flights of stairs.
  • Must be able to work near loud noises and electrical equipment.
  • Must be able to work in tight spaces and/or on rooftops.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs with or without accommodation.
  • Must be able to exert up to 30 pounds of force frequently.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, bend, climb, for prolonged periods of time.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct objects, structures, and buildings.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures that are required in maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematic drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Installing and repairing all types of plumbing fixtures such as heaters, flush valves, gate valves, globe valves, hot water circulation pumps, mixing valves, relief valves, supply lines, and P‑traps.
  • Operate hand and power tools associated in the plumbing trade. Responsible for gathering materials needed for each job such as skill saw, table saw, band saws, and other plumbing tools.
  • Install new lines and repair broken lines. Example: sewer lines, unstopping sewer lines, lavatories, kitchen sinks, washing machine drains, floor drains, dish machine drains, food disposals, etc.
  • Work with vendors to obtain quotes for materials needed to complete tasks and projects.
  • Upon completion of the job or at the end of the day, ensure that no hazardous condition exists, clean up all trash and debris, no slippery surfaces or open holes in pathways, and no exposed pipes, sharp edges, or hot plumbing surfaces.
