About The Position

Human Resources announces an opening for a FTE Carpenter I/II, 1st shift. This is a 260-day, grade M-08/M-09 position located at the Trades Center with the Maintenance Office. The work schedule/shift assignment is subject to change depending upon the needs of APS. The applicant hired for this position is hired for the position, not the work schedule or shift assignment. Once hired, an employee may be reassigned to another schedule or shift at the discretion of APS.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions and to read and interpret plans, diagrams, drawings, prints, schematics, etc.
  • Ability to use arithmetic computations to measure, calculate quantities and costs, etc. and ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good leadership and interpersonal relationships.
  • High school diploma, including some courses in industrial arts and/or shop mechanics, and a combination of training equivalent to an apprenticeship in carpentry, and some responsible work in the carpentry or related trades at the lead level.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid vehicle operator's license; certification in operation and/or use of specific power equipment and shop machines.
  • Possession of journeyman carpenter card or equivalent evidence of competency for Carpenter II.
  • Good knowledge and ability to operate a broad range of power and hand carpentry and sheet metal fabrication tools, equipment, and related shop machinery.
  • Good knowledge of the common procedures, materials, hazards, and safety precautions associated with construction, carpentry, cabinetmaking, and related construction activities and ability to respond appropriately in hazardous situations.
  • Familiarity with safely working from ladders, scaffoldings and lifts.
  • Good knowledge of national, state, and local codes and regulations relevant to trades.

Responsibilities

  • Performs semiskilled to full journey-level maintenance, repair, and construction tasks in carpentry trade.
  • Confers with supervisor to learn nature of work assignments, and to advise or consult on crew assignments, equipment to be used, and materials to be obtained or purchased; may be authorized to order or purchase materials.
  • May direct and inspect work performed by crew, summer or vocational student workers, and/or community service workers; provides guidance and training as necessary.
  • Ensures all safety precautions, regulations and equipment are utilized appropriately, and that work complies with county building codes.
  • Participates in setup and cleanup of work site to ensure safe environment.
  • Reviews building plans and surveys and measures where construction or installation is to be performed to determine layout, quantity, size, and type of materials and equipment to be used and other preparation considerations.
  • Uses hand and power tools, builds and/or installs wall or partition frames, bathroom stalls, platforms or ramps.
  • Cuts wood, sheet rock, metal panels, or other materials to fit; constructs walls or other surfaces; finishes joins and sands to ensure a solid, even surface.
  • Measures and alters door and door openings to fit, constructs door frames, installs hinges, hangs doors, installs locks, glass and other hardware, and performs necessary adjustments to ensure the door is balanced and moves properly.
  • Lays out and constructs hanging ceiling grids, cuts and installs ceiling tiles.
  • Uses chemicals or tools to prepare floors, cuts and installs floor tiles.
  • Uses cabinetmaking skills and equipment, including power and hand tools and shop machinery to cut, construct, and repair wooden and metal furniture, framed display boards, lockers, and other building furnishings.
  • Sands or otherwise prepares and stains, seals, lacquers, or occasionally paints furniture and structural surfaces.
  • May work with educational staff and students to build specially adapted furniture for handicapped students.
  • Maintains records on work of crew and contractors, prepares emergency, safety, and problem reports.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair on tools and equipment.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.
