About The Position

This position is responsible for maintaining the plant's equipment, machinery, facilities, buildings, vehicles and grounds at a medium to large water/wastewater treatment facility. This individual directs the activities and duties of assigned subordinate Maintenance Mechanics. The individual in this position will frequently be called on to perform hands-on maintenance repairs and serve as training instructor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma; sixty college credit hours preferred or equivalent technical education.
  • Five years of experience in the field of industrial maintenance, vehicle repair and construction, including specific experience in mechanical applications such as hydraulics, power transmission equipment, pump maintenance, pipe fitting, pneumatics, lubrication and shaft alignment techniques.
  • Valid Texas driver's license and Commercial driver's license.
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (or predecessor agency) Class B Water or Wastewater Operators Certificate of Competency as required (if applicable).
  • Thorough knowledge of operation and repairs to mechanical equipment including mechanical and fluid drive systems, installing and replacing bearing and shaft seals; pump installation and maintenance; conveying systems; installation and maintenance of piping; installing and maintaining of tubing/hose systems; and installation and maintaining of valves. A good working knowledge of utility construction to include underground piping installations, light carpentry, plumbing and welding. Fleet equipment and vehicle repair. Computer software to include Microsoft Office applications, Maximo, etc.
  • Ability to make decisions and exercise good judgment. Good oral and written skills. Attention to detail is essential.
  • Must be able to perform formal and informal maintenance training as required.
  • This position requires passing a physical and physical ability assessment specific to this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Heavy equipment operation is a plus, and two years’ supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Water-Surface Treatment Operator "C" License (Required within 3 years of hire date, if applicable).

Responsibilities

  • Develops, maintains and schedules a program of repair for all machinery, equipment, structures, buildings, grounds and vehicles owned by the project facility through corrective, preventative and predictive maintenance strategies.
  • Coordinates with other departments, inspectors, contractors and vendors on project maintenance and repairs. Works with engineers to provide relevant data for the design and construction of plant renovations and improvements.
  • Analyzes mechanical problems and estimates job requirements, plans and schedules work activities. Responsible for the acquisition of parts and materials. Manages spare parts and materials inventories and supplies. Allocates the proper resources to complete job or project.
  • Initiates and/or conducts condition assessments and repairs to project facilities, equipment, grounds, structures, machinery and vehicles by replacement, modification and/or redesign within the economical boundaries of the department. May be required to work offsite.
  • Responsible for the documentation and record keeping of a group of subordinate employees and associated work. Must be familiar with and capable of using all Authority software (i.e. Computerized Maintenance Management System, Microsoft applications, etc.). Develops the knowledge, skills and abilities of subordinate employees to effectively utilize computer applications and software, including but not limited to; Microsoft Office business applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) computerized maintenance management system or enterprise software, and SharePoint or other common cloud based file sharing services.
  • Responsible for researching and developing specifications for the maintenance and repairs to facilities and process equipment. Conducts QA/QC of all contract work within assigned area of responsibility. Utilizes blue prints, Operations and Maintenance manuals, technical publications and manufacturer’s specifications, and instructs others in their proper use.
  • Directly supervises a group of more junior level maintenance employees to include hiring, career development training, on-the-job training, scheduling and performance evaluation. Ensures that all safety guideline and security measures as established by Authority are followed. Provides operational technical and safety training to subordinates. Functions as training instructor. Will be required to develop training aids and/or materials.
  • Performs duties of Supervisor/Maintenance Operations Chief as required.
  • May be responsible for responding to various emergency situations, including after-hours, as directed by supervisor.
  • May be required to participate in an emergency on call program.
  • Dependent on assignment may be required to use and Air Respirator/SCBA. Dependent on assignment may be identified as “essential personnel” which requires reporting to work during adverse weather conditions.
  • Assists in the safe handling and unloading of chemicals in the plant.
  • Employees assigned to this position are classified as essential personnel. Essential personnel are required to report to work when scheduled during departmental and/or emergency situations including, but not limited to, extended periods of inclement weather when travel may be difficult. This position is essential because in the absence of sufficient personnel, the plant cannot operate safely.
