About The Position

The Maintenance Mechanic 3 position is primarily responsible for vehicle maintenance, maintenance records, inventory control, and asset management at the Fire Training Academy. The incumbent serves as the point of accountability for ensuring vehicles, equipment, and assets are properly maintained, tracked, and available to support training operations. In addition, the role performs a combination of journey-level equipment and vehicle repairs and semi-skilled tasks such as electrical diagnostics, HVAC troubleshooting, and carpentry to support facility operations. The employee is expected to work independently, develop preliminary cost estimates for repairs, maintenance, and facility alterations, and present prioritized recommendations to the Maintenance Supervisor 3. As a lead role, this position also may provide direction and support to part-time instructor support staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted Washington State driver’s license.
  • Must possess basic carpentry skills including layout framing, concrete form work.
  • Must be able to use basic hand and power tools safely, effectively, and efficiently.
  • Must possess basic computer skills for sending email, completing time and travel documentation, documenting and closing work orders.
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds repeatedly.
  • Must be able to climb a ladder.
  • Must be able to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Two (2) years of work experience in building and equipment maintenance, inventory management, construction or repair work, and/or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade.
  • Must be proficient in at least two or more trades on buildings and grounds such as: HVAC, carpentry, plumbing, irrigation, electrical, etc…
  • Ability to read O&M manuals and/or system diagrams through a range of commercial and industrial maintenance and/or automotive work.
  • Demonstrate experience in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, welding, machining, controls, carpentry, or plumbing skill sets.
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade OR one (1) year of experience as a journey-level worker in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or automotive repair work.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees vehicle, equipment, and asset maintenance, including scheduling, preventive care, repairs, vendor coordination, and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Perform facility and training systems maintenance to keep campus systems safe and operational.
  • Manage inventory to ensure parts and associated services are available.
  • Monitors basic operation of water systems.
  • Respond to emergencies and special projects, document work and outcomes.
