About The Position

HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the largest industrial employer in Virginia with over 25,000 employees. They are the sole designer, builder, and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines, with a 135-year history. The company's diverse team includes skilled trades, engineers, and technical experts. The Maintenance Machinist/Repair role involves performing preventative maintenance and repairing mechanical, air, pump, and hydraulic equipment. The position requires the ability to climb ladders, work at heights, lift a minimum of 40 lbs., and work in confined spaces. The selected candidate will specifically repair and maintain critical plant service equipment and systems, including low and high-pressure steam systems, river water systems, air compressors, and demineralized water systems, performing calibration and preventive maintenance. The role requires a team player who is highly motivated and can work with minimal supervision, primarily on a day shift, but must be able to work any shift.

  • Solid understanding of pumps, motors, boiler maintenance, boiler auxiliary systems, compressors and demineralized water systems
  • Knowledge of the basic steam cycle, water chemistry, automated boiler control systems, HP and LP Air systems

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of plant operations, pipefitting, and troubleshooting control systems
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blue prints and technical specifications and/or equipment repair manuals
  • Solid understanding of the basic steam cycle, water chemistry, automated boiler control systems, burner management systems, pumps, boiler auxiliary systems, compressors and generation of demineralized water
  • Ability to utilize basic hand tools, power tools, and precision tools
  • High School graduate or equivalent preferred
  • Previous military experience with boiler maintenance and repair and associated systems
  • Experience repairing and maintaining 600 psi and above marine type boilers
  • Experience in repairing and maintaining centrifugal pump systems
  • Experience in repairing and maintaining gearboxes and drive trains
  • Previous millwright experience
  • Knowledge of River water systems and burner management systems

Responsibilities

  • Performing preventative maintenance and repairing of mechanical tools, air tools, pump and hydraulic equipment
  • Repair and maintain critical equipment and systems which provide plant services, including low and high pressure steam system, river water system, air compressors, demineralized water systems
  • Perform calibration and preventive maintenance on critical equipment and systems
