Maintenance II - Life Safety Technician
About The Position
This role involves leading complex maintenance, remodeling, and construction projects within occupied healthcare spaces. The technician will perform advanced work across multiple trades including carpentry, drywall, flooring, ceilings, doors, and finishes. Key responsibilities include interpreting construction documents, coordinating with clinical staff and facilities leadership, ensuring compliance with hospital safety standards and codes, and mentoring junior staff. The position also requires serving as a lead responder for urgent repairs, inspecting completed work, and participating in an on-call rotation for facility emergencies. A significant aspect of the role is ensuring regulatory compliance with standards from NFPA, DNV, CMS, and OSHA, and managing system maintenance for fire alarms, sprinklers, and emergency lighting. The technician will also implement Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM), design and execute drills and training, investigate safety incidents, and maintain physical safety logs for audit readiness. Professional conduct, excellent attendance, and maintaining positive working relationships are also expected.
Requirements
- Advanced knowledge of commercial construction and hospital maintenance practices.
- 8+ years of maintenance or construction experience (healthcare preferred).
- Demonstrated leadership or lead-worker experience.
- Excellent attendance record.
- Wears appropriate clothing for job functions.
- Wears ID badge.

Responsibilities
- Lead complex maintenance, remodeling, and construction projects in occupied healthcare spaces.
- Perform advanced work across multiple trades (carpentry, drywall, flooring, ceilings, doors, finishes).
- Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and scope documents.
- Coordinate work with clinical staff, infection control, and facilities leadership.
- Ensure compliance with hospital safety standards, ICRA requirements, and applicable codes.
- Mentor and guide Maintenance/Construction Worker 2 and 3 staff.
- Serve as lead responder for urgent repairs related to building structure and finishes.
- Inspect completed work for quality, safety, and compliance.
- Participate in on-call rotation and respond to facility emergencies as required.
- Schedule, track, and document regular inspections and testing for fire alarms, smoke detectors, automated sprinklers, and emergency exit lighting, elevators, etc.
- Implement and monitor necessary safety mitigations during active facility construction, renovation, or equipment downtime.
- Design and execute routine fire drills, evacuate training exercises, and disaster preparedness courses for healthcare staff.
- Act as the primary investigator for workplace safety accidents, electrical failures, hazards, or near-miss events to determine root causes.
- Collect, manage, and file exhaustive physical safety logs to provide to state and national healthcare inspectors during unannounced facility surveys.
- Ensure that appearance and personal conduct are professional at all times.
- Maintain a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, administration, and staff.
- Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
