About The Position

Winona County is accepting applications for this position until 4:00 p.m. May 18, 2026. This position starts at $27.66/hour (DOQ) with advancement up to $35.38/hour. Under direction of the Fleet, Building and Grounds Superintendent, workers in this classification perform a variety of building maintenance duties within all County buildings. Work involves performing cleaning and maintenance operations as well as maintaining the safe and efficient operation of the heating, cooling, fire protection, ventilating equipment, motors, pumps, and mechanical systems that supply power to County facilities. Workers in this classification perform repairs of plumbing, heating, and related deficiencies, and operate power equipment to maintain the grounds. Workers in this classification may be responsible for repair of department equipment. Occasionally, employees in this classification may be asked to oversee non-County workers (i.e., temporary service employees, contractors, etc.). During snowstorms, flooding, or other inclement conditions, workers in this classification will be required to work and will perform assigned duties commensurate with abilities. Work involves contact with hazardous materials. Employees in this class must be available for rotation of shift and/or weekend work. Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of custodial or building maintenance experience is highly desired.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge and skill in performing maintenance on electrical systems, heating and cooling systems, fuel systems, plumbing, ventilation, and fire protection.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written assignments.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public and coworkers.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including internet, email, Help Desk and Building Management Programs.
  • Ability to report to work within 45 minutes.
  • Knowledge of operating characteristics of assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of safety and hazardous procedures.
  • Knowledge and skill in welding and fabrication techniques.
  • Knowledge and ability to diagnose and perform maintenance on all other mechanical aspects for the broad spectrum of vehicles/equipment used by the Maintenance Department.
  • Skill in the use of tools and materials commonly used in building maintenance activities.
  • Ability to read technical manuals and blueprints.
  • Must possess and maintain a 2nd class C boilers license.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must possess a valid class B driver’s license or the ability to obtain and maintain a class B driver’s license within 1 year of employment.
  • Must be able to medically qualify for the use of a respirator.
  • Must be able to pass a security background check.

  • Three years of custodial or building maintenance experience is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general custodial duties to include: Wash windows, clean furniture, remove rubbish, and wastepaper from building grounds, empty trashcans and recycling, replenish supplies.
  • Performs grounds maintenance duties to include: Sweep sidewalks, mow grass, trim/cut trees, and snow removal which may include shoveling or use of other equipment such as a vehicle with snowplow or skid steer.
  • Assists in the maintenance of all County parking lots, which may include striping, patching, and seal coating.
  • Performs building maintenance duties to include: Secure and open buildings, lock and unlock doors, control lighting. Repair doors and locks.
  • Minor plumbing repairs (faucets, showers, toilets, drains).
  • Minor carpentry repairs, painting and patching walls.
  • Minor electrical repairs (ballasts, change light bulbs, circuit breakers).
  • Repair, maintain, and operate equipment.
  • Assists in operation of the County Safety program by checking and maintaining safety equipment and assisting in safety drills.
  • Performs preventive and routine maintenance of buildings including ventilation, boilers, chillers, humidifiers, fire protection, pumps, valves, belts, filters, and miscellaneous equipment.
  • Performs repairs on equipment (skid steers, snowblowers, generators, floor scrubbers, vacuums, floor buffers, etc.).
  • Performs welding and fabrication.
  • Utilizes computer literacy for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) automated logic to perform tests on equipment to determine necessary repairs and control building climate.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
