About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of the Physical Plant, this role manages and performs a wide range of facility repairs, maintenance, and improvement projects across campus and off-site properties. The incumbent must understand project requirements, assist with project estimates, coordinate contractors and vendors, and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with organizational standards. The position requires a strong working knowledge of residential and commercial building maintenance and general carpentry, as well as support for the Agency’s basic plumbing, electrical, and HVAC needs. In conjunction with the Director of the Physical Plan, assess maintenance and construction needs; determine appropriate materials, tools, equipment, labor, and outside services to complete projects. Assists with coordinating projects from initial planning through completion. Must have flexibility for scheduled after-hours and weekends (as needed).

Requirements

  • High School diploma
  • Basic working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems
  • Possess a sound working knowledge of carpentry
  • Valid CT Driver’s License
  • Must be able to squat, kneel, crawl, climb, stretch, reach, bend, push, pull, and work in confined or difficult-to-access areas
  • Able to stand and walk for extended periods of time as well as work from ladders and elevated surfaces when necessary and permitted
  • Carry, move, and stock supplies and equipment weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including prolonged exposure to cold and winter weather.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and communicate with contractors, vendors, departments, and other personnel to ensure projects are completed effectively and on schedule.
  • Monitor contracted work to ensure specifications and quality standards are met within the timeline.
  • Maintain appropriate project and maintenance documentation.
  • Perform and/or coordinate general carpentry and light construction work in and around main campus and off-site properties.
  • Understand the capabilities and functions of various maintenance trades and determine when specialized trade contractors are required.
  • Perform general carpentry including installing, repairing, and adjusting interior and exterior doors; painting; installing and repairing drywall; general finish carpentry and overall handyman-type projects.
  • Perform basic working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems sufficient to identify routine maintenance needs and perform minor repairs when appropriate.
  • Safely operate snow removal equipment, tools, and vehicles to perform snow removal from Agency properties.
  • Be available throughout the snow season for scheduled snow removal, including after-hours, nights, weekends, and holiday emergency calls (as required).
  • Travel using an organizational/company vehicle to off-site locations to perform maintenance, repairs, construction, and facilities support duties.
  • Coordinate work at off-site properties with appropriate staff and departments.
  • Perform a variety of custodial and facility duties as needed, including mopping, vacuuming, floor care, cleaning, and related tasks.
  • Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and other items as required for projects, agency events, and facility operations.
  • Assist with other facilities-related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, construction equipment, and maintenance equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures, OSHA requirements, organizational policies, and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in safe operating condition.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
