About The Position

This position involves performing maintenance work and supervising skilled inmate craftsmen (5-10) in the Maintenance Department at Louisiana State Penitentiary. The facility is large, encompassing 3,424,522 square feet of enclosed building space in 489 buildings. The Louisiana State Penitentiary (LSP) is the state’s only Class 1A facility and the only correctional facility providing custody and control of adult male inmates who have been sentenced to death. Requirements

  • Four years of experience or training in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or park operations and grounds maintenance.
  • OR Completion of a two-year vocational technical program in general building construction, construction technology, or engineering plus two years of experience in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or park operations and grounds maintenance.
  • OR Twelve semester hours in construction management, construction technology, or engineering, or any combination of these courses plus two years of experience in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or park operations and grounds maintenance.
  • Two years of the required experience must have been on-the-job experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises skilled inmate craftsmen in performing electrical repairs and installations, including receptacles, transformer banks, Mult breakers, electrical wiring, fans, dishwashing and cooking equipment, security lights, generators, power lines, and guide wires.
  • Oversees inmate work in plumbing, including the installation of commercial appliances and plumbing fixtures, water and gas lines, and adjustments of gas regulators.
  • Manages inmate carpentry tasks such as repairing roofs, hanging doors, installing floor tiles, sheetrock, constructing shelves, guard rails, small buildings, and laying concrete blocks and bricks.
  • Directs inmate welding activities for the maintenance and repair of water lines, calderas, gates, fences, and gas lines, including heavy equipment and pressure boilers (with assistance from outside vendors).
  • Supervises inmate masonry work, including the laying of brick, terra cotta, ceramic and hollow tile, and other building blocks.
  • Oversees inmate work in refrigeration, including the maintenance and repair of heating and air conditioning systems, refrigerators, large walk-in coolers, ice makers, and exhaust fans.
  • Works with adult male inmates of all custody levels (minimum, medium, maximum, and protective custody).
  • Supports the Facility Maintenance Manager.
  • Supervises inmates.
