About The Position

The City of Springfield is seeking applicants for a Maintenance Equipment Operator position within the Office of Public Utilities, Division of Supt Of Lake Sevices-Maintenan. The work location is CWLP PMC SPRINGFIELD, Illinois, 62701. This role is part of the AFSCME 337 union. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, at least one year of equipment operation experience, a valid Class D driver’s license, and CDL classification. The ideal candidate will have experience operating a variety of equipment, be available to work nights, weekends, and overtime, often in inclement weather. This role may involve exposure to allergens, insects, herbicides, fuel, and loud noise. Candidates should be able to read and follow written instructions, perform daily equipment maintenance, and have basic knowledge of tree care, pruning, and snow removal practices. Supervisory ability over seasonal staff is also required.

Requirements

  • Experience operating a variety of equipment including small hand tools, power mowers, weed eaters, saws, rototillers, tree spades, stumpers, sprayers, and snow removal equipment such as dump trucks with plows and spreaders.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and overtime, often in inclement weather including rain, snow, extreme heat, and cold.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions.
  • Ability to perform daily equipment maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of tree care, pruning, and snow removal practices.
  • Supervisory ability over seasonal staff.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of equipment operation experience.
  • A valid Class D driver’s license.
  • CDL classification.

  • Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.
  • Current City employees must have completed their probationary period and attained certified status in their current position to be eligible to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Mow grass and trim weeds.
  • Clean restrooms, parks, Beach House, Bridgeview Park Building, and other CWLP property.
  • Operate chipper, chain saw and pruning equipment.
  • Perform maintenance on equipment.
  • Pick up rip rap, garbage and branches.
  • Perform snow removal.
  • Plant trees, bushes, and other landscape material.
