About The Position

The Salvation Army Rochester Corps is “Doing the Most Good” by providing holistic, person-centered services to individuals and families in need. In addition to worship services and pastoral care, services include short and long-term case management; food, clothing, utility, rent, and housing support; and connections to community partners. The Maintenance Custodian ensures a clean, safe, and welcoming facility through custodial work, basic maintenance, and event support. Responsibilities also include minor repairs, grounds upkeep and securing the building as a key holder.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least one year of custodial and/or general maintenance experience required.
  • Must pass background checks.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Have a clear MVR.
  • Knowledge of safe use and handling of cleaning chemicals, tools, and equipment.
  • Basic understanding of preventative maintenance and ability to perform light repairs.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, sweeping, mopping, climbing ladders, and snow removal.
  • Dependable and self-motivated with strong attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Clear and respectful communication with team members, volunteers, and guests is essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of custodial and/or general maintenance experience preferred.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., using email or completing simple work orders) a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure assigned areas—including the Social Services building, Chapel, offices, common areas, and restrooms—are maintained in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition through routine custodial tasks.
  • Support preventative maintenance efforts by completing assigned work orders and performing tasks within the scope of training and established safety guidelines.
  • Maintain exterior grounds by removing debris and performing light landscaping tasks. May assist with seasonal needs such as snow removal, lawn mowing, or basic vehicle upkeep.
  • Provide logistical support for special and seasonal events, including room setup, supply transport, and related tasks.
  • Assist with small-scale repairs and facility improvement projects across assigned buildings and properties.
  • Secure the building as a key holder.
  • Drive an agency vehicle locally to support the mission of The Salvation Army.
