About The Position

The Maintenance & Custodial Technician is responsible for the overall cleanliness and maintenance of the Fair Ridge Family Shelter. This position will report to the Assistant Director of Operations and assist with maintenance contractors working at the facility and keep a running maintenance request log and work closely with Fairfax Counties Facilities Maintenance Division who regularly services the facility. The Maintenance & Custodial Technician is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and well-functioning environment throughout the Fair Ridge Family Shelter. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Operations, this position performs custodial and routine facility maintenance duties, coordinates with maintenance contractors and service providers, maintains a comprehensive log of maintenance requests and completed work, and serves as the primary liaison with Fairfax County's Facilities Management Division to ensure timely repairs, preventative maintenance, and the overall upkeep of the facility.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when needed

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of resident rooms, common areas, and facility grounds to identify cleanliness, maintenance, and safety concerns.
  • Perform basic maintenance and preventative upkeep, including drain maintenance, replacing light bulbs, changing HVAC filters, tightening fixtures, and completing minor repairs.
  • Coordinate and escort contractors, vendors, inspectors, and service providers throughout the shelter; report major maintenance issues to the Assistant Director of Shelter Operations.
  • Maintain inventory of custodial, maintenance, and operational supplies, including receiving, storing, organizing, and restocking materials as needed.
  • Ensure storage areas, sheds, tools, and equipment are clean, organized, properly maintained, and compliant with safety standards.
  • Maintain shelter grounds, entrances, walkways, parking areas, and landscaped spaces, including litter removal and seasonal upkeep.
  • Set up and break down meeting rooms, trainings, resident programs, and special events; arrange furniture and ensure spaces are clean, organized, and adequately supplied.
  • Follow all safety procedures, infection-control practices, and organizational policies to maintain a safe environment for residents, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Properly handle, order, and store cleaning chemicals, maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Safely operate, maintain, and store custodial equipment, maintenance tools, cleaning chemicals, and other supplies in accordance with safety guidelines, manufacturer recommendations, and Shelter House policies.
  • Participate in staff meetings, required trainings, emergency shelter operations, special projects, and other duties as assigned while maintaining a professional, respectful, and service-oriented approach.
  • In the event of staff vacancies or extreme weather, assist with cleaning the building, including office space and client areas. Provide custodial support during staffing shortages, emergency situations, severe weather events, or other operational needs by cleaning resident areas, offices, common spaces, bathrooms, and other areas of the facility to ensure continuity of operations.
  • This position is considered to be an essential worker.
