About The Position

The Tucson Convention Center, including the Tucson Arena, Linda Ronstadt Music Hall, and Leo Rich Theater, has an opening for a skilled Maintenance Craftsman. This role is responsible for operating, monitoring, repairing, and maintaining various facility systems to ensure safe and efficient operation. The position involves a range of maintenance tasks, from environmental controls and electrical systems to general repairs like painting, patching, and minor plumbing fixes. The Craftsman will also prepare surfaces for painting, operate and maintain painting equipment, and interpret building codes. Preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical systems, general equipment room maintenance, and adherence to preventive maintenance and energy management programs are key aspects of the role. Additionally, the position requires proper labeling and storage of equipment and materials, accurate record-keeping of work performed, and promoting a safe working environment. Operation of various equipment, including light trucks and forklifts, may be required, and the role may involve exposure to fumes or chemicals and working at heights with proper safety equipment. The Craftsman will also develop lists of necessary repairs and improvements and may perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Know general techniques in painting, plumbing, carpentry, and building hardware maintenance and electrical/lighting systems.
  • Shop math applicable to the building trades.
  • Possess understanding of the operational procedures, facility capabilities, industry terminology, event-related services, and technical requirements for the types of events anticipated at the facility.
  • Interpret shop drawings, sketches, and work orders.
  • Understand and work from general instructions, specifications, blueprints, sketches, and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Follow all policies/procedures, risk management, safety precautions, rules, regulations, and emergency procedures established at the facility.
  • Demonstrate the ability to carry out tasks in a reliable, productive, and expedient manner and be able to adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with clients, employees, exhibitors, patrons, and others encountered in the course of employment.
  • Organize and prioritize work from event overviews and task lists to meeting deadlines.
  • Work effectively under pressure and/or stringent schedule and produce accurate results.
  • Follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively with others in both oral and written form.
  • Perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ensuring and following safety measures and regulations for forklift operation.
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours may vary due to functions and may include day, evening, weekends, and holidays.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One to three months related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Work independently, exercise judgement and initiative.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Remain flexible and adjust to situations as they occur.

  • Be licensed to operate a motor vehicle in the United States is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operates, monitors, repairs, and maintains the facility's environmental controls, emergency power, electrical, HVAC, fire system, and lighting systems as required for the safe and efficient operation of the facility.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance tasks such as painting, patching, re-lamping, replacing ceiling tiles, door hardware repair, and correcting simple plumbing problems, as required.
  • Prepares a variety of surfaces (e.g., cleaning, sanding, patching, masking, nail holes, cracks, joints, etc.) to ensure they are ready for painting and/or refinishing.
  • Operates, cleans, and maintains all painting equipment, including brush, roll, sprayers and electrostatic sprayers, pumps, etc.
  • Interpret, explain, and apply building codes, rules and regulations involved in assigned maintenance activities.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on bearings, pumps, motors, shaft alignments and fans.
  • Performs general maintenance on equipment rooms
  • Follow the preventive maintenance program, energy management program and standard operating procedures for all machinery and equipment.
  • Perform proper methods of labeling, storing equipment, materials, and supplies in a safe manner.
  • Record and log all work performed, complete work order slips and compile all required reports in a timely and complete manner.
  • Promote a safe working environment for all employees by following the life safety and emergency program as needed.
  • Operate equipment, such as light trucks, pallet jacks, forklifts, access lifts, or other light power-driven equipment.
  • May occasionally have to enter areas where fumes, airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals are present.
  • Work at heights using correct safety equipment.
  • Develop and submit lists of necessary repairs and improvements.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
