This temporary position is with NC Dept of Agriculture – Steve Troxler Sciences Center, located at 4400 Reedy Creek Road, Raleigh NC, Wake County. Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $30.00 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application). DESCRIPTION OF WORK: This temporary position will be assigned to the NC Dept of Agriculture – Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center. Part-time or Full-time (30+ hours per week) will be considered. The Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center (ASC) houses all the regulatory laboratories for the Department of Agriculture. The labs consist of the Food & Drug Protection Division Chemistry, Microbiology, and Pesticide Residue labs; the Animal Disease Diagnostic lab; the Standards Division Weights and Measures lab, and the Standards Division Fuel Quality testing lab. The facility also houses a Bio-Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory. These laboratories form the scientific basis for all regulatory work performed by the Department ensuring consumer protection for human and animal food, commerce, and animal health. The primary responsibilities for this temporary assignment include: supervising technicians, performing highly skilled work, and exercising initiative and judgement to troubleshoot complex systems. This position ensures proper performance and maintenance of the following: Physical plant operations (high pressure steam boilers, hot water boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and incinerators), HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general construction. Supervising staff Interacting with and coordinating subcontractors during repairs or improvement projects. Work may occasionally be performed in areas containing necropsies/animal carcasses, biological materials, incineration systems, and associated odors. Employees receive appropriate safety training and PPE to safely carry out required activities in these environments In addition to the main veterinary division lab located in Raleigh, the Facility Maintenance team is responsible for three satellite laboratories: Griffin Laboratory (Monroe, NC), Northwestern Laboratory (Elkin, NC), and the Western Laboratory (Fletcher, NC). Typical travel to each of these labs is once per month as a day trip. Some overnight travel may be required throughout the state. Occasional work at the Raleigh location will be required after hours. May be on emergency call back duties during adverse weather conditions and at other times as required.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and two (2) years of experience in the performance of the full range of journey level tasks associated with two (2) or more highly complex mechanical or building trades; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license
  • Dependable and reliable with strong time-management skills

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of building codes, blueprints and building automation control systems
  • Ability to anticipate downstream impacts of mechanical systems to maintain continuous lab operations
  • Ability to provide direction and supervise the work of maintenance technicians and contractors
  • May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I. II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
  • Must either have, or obtain within the first 1 year of employment, a pesticides applicator’s license.
  • Must be able to arrive at the ASC facility within 60 minutes
