About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) is seeking a self-motivated Maintenance/Construction Technician II for its maintenance team at South Mountains State Park. This role involves performing manual work to maintain park grounds, facilities, and equipment. The technician will work both independently and with others, assisting with custodial duties, boundary line clearing, trail maintenance, trash collection, mowing, trimming, prescribed burns, and basic auto mechanics. The DNCR manages over 100 locations across the state, including historic sites, museums, state parks, and more, aiming to enrich people's lives through education and stewardship of North Carolina's natural and cultural resources.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND one (1) year of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas.
  • OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Within 12-24 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain: Class A CDL, CPR Certification, Emergency Medical Responder Certification, Wildland Fire Suppression Certifications, Certified in S-112 Chainsaw Operations Training - perform hazardous tree assessments and if necessary, tree removal within the park.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated work experience performing trades in at least two of the following: carpentry, plumbing, electrical and/or auto mechanics.
  • Demonstrated experience in performing grounds maintenance/landscaping.
  • Demonstrated experience in performing maintenance on buildings, facilities, and grounds maintenance equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks in a trade such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC and facility maintenance, and/or auto mechanics.
  • Operating large and small equipment and/or tools.
  • Purchasing resources in accordance with state purchasing policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining records and preparing operational forms.
  • Assisting in housekeeping.
  • May supervise temporary and permanent staff, community service participants, and/or volunteers on special projects.
