About The Position

The mission of Maintenance & Operations is to provide excellence in transportation by keeping the state's road transportation network in a state of good repair through the careful and consistent application of personnel, equipment and financial resources. This position is classified as essential and must be available to work overtime as needed, and during storm events and other emergency events on short notice and in some cases no advance notice.

Requirements

  • Six months experience in assessing or preventing roadway and right of way problems using the latest technologies for items such as concrete, asphalt, tar and chip, drainage systems, or guard rails.
  • Six months experience in interpreting highway construction/maintenance laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Six months experience in staff supervision which includes planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.
  • Knowledge of estimating highway construction/maintenance costs.

Responsibilities

  • Directs, organizes and supervises routine, emergency and/or preventative highway and/or bridge maintenance and repair, beautification, and/or drainage projects in assigned geographic area.
  • Develops work strategies and timetables for projects/programs.
  • Assigns, monitors and evaluates the work of subordinates.
  • Counsels and disciplines workers.
  • Prepares reports and cost estimates for use in monitoring, controlling and budgeting maintenance projects.
  • Prepares personnel-related reports.
  • Provides technical direction and guidance to assistants and work crews.
  • Directs and supervises traffic detours and takes appropriate traffic control measures in accordance with safety and traffic standards and procedures.
  • Receives, investigates, and provides responses to complaints pertaining to a wide variety of highway maintenance, traffic, and/or drainage issues and concerns.
  • Provides information and support for the emergency response teams, law agencies, and other agencies in cases of natural or man-made disaster, traffic accidents, spills, etc.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable State and Federal rules, regulations, policies, programs and procedures.
  • Evaluates condition and/or performance of equipment and makes recommendations regarding equipment maintenance and acquisition.
  • Operates a computer to input and/or retrieve information about work orders, man hours, materials inventory, fleet inventory parts inventory and road infrastructure information for use in planning and prioritizing work orders and maintenance and repair projects.
