About The Position

Under the general direction of the Regional Maintenance and Operations Chief, this position oversees the Valdez District Maintenance and Operations program, supervising 29 staff and managing approximately 397 lane miles of roadway, four airports, four maintenance stations, and the district equipment fleet. The incumbent manages an annual $4.5 million operating budget and various Capital Improvement Projects while ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements, safety standards, and environmental regulations. The position directs highway and airport maintenance activities, evaluates roadway and airport conditions, manages personnel and equipment needs, and provides technical guidance to maintenance staff and project teams. The incumbent also serves as a liaison with Planning, Design, and Construction, reviewing projects and plans to ensure they support safe, efficient, and sustainable maintenance practices.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of engineering and their practical applications.
  • Plans, distributes, coordinates, and monitors work assignments of others; evaluates work performance and provides feedback to others on their performance; ensures that staff are appropriately selected, utilized, and developed, and that they are treated in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
  • Organizes work, sets priorities, and determines resource requirements; determines short- or long-term goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinates with other organizations or parts of the organization to accomplish goals; monitors progress and evaluates outcomes.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and appropriate tools to construct, maintain, or repair road surfaces, including sidewalks, parking lots, runways, etc.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road, including costs and limits.
  • Any combination of preparatory post-secondary education and/or progressively responsible experience in highway, utility, or airport maintenance, operations, design, or construction; project and/or program management/administration, engineering; construction management; business administration, or other closely related field.
