About The Position

At CenterPoint Energy, we are committed to delivering safe, reliable natural gas to our customers. As a Fabrication Shop Apprentice, you will play a critical support role in the fabrication and assembly of essential natural gas infrastructure components. This entry-level union position provides hands-on training alongside skilled fabricators, fostering the technical skills and safety practices needed for a successful career in the natural gas industry. You will support the fabrication, assembly, and repair of metal components used in natural gas operations while learning industry best practices and safety standards — all in alignment with the standards of your union apprenticeship program.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must obtain welding certification within two-year Apprentice program.
  • Must obtain Class A CDL within two-year Apprentice program.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and a strong interest in fabrication and natural gas operations.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions, adhere to safety guidelines, and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Willingness to complete required training and coursework associated with the apprenticeship.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in teams of two – three (2-3) members to accomplish given assignments.
  • Loads and unloads required equipment, tools and supplies onto and from truck.
  • Sets up safety, warning, and instruction signs and cones.
  • Locates gas lines using probe bar.
  • Excavates ground to access gas lines which may include, but is not limited to, the use of picks, shovels, sharp-shooters, jack hammers, and pavement saws.
  • Digs ditches during gas line excavation process.
  • Cut and grinds pipe in preparation for welding.
  • Uncovers main gas valves, risers, etc.
  • Fills in holes made to access gas lines and may include, but is not limited to, shoveling dirt and/or sand and tamping dirt (compacting) with either manual or mechanically driven tamper.
  • Performs housekeeping activities around job site after work has been completed.
  • Assists in attaching pipes, T’s, risers, etc.
  • Training in performing higher classifications jobs.
  • CenterPoint Energy reserves the right to use employees in other job disciplines or job functions other than the discipline hired as deemed necessary by the company.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in team meetings, safety briefings and quality inspections as directed.
