About The Position

Travelers is seeking a Mainframe Network Engineer to join our organization as we grow and transform our Enterprise Technology Solutions organization. Our Infrastructure Engineers serve as a foundational cornerstone of the enterprise technology ecosystem, encompassing a diverse portfolio of critical systems that power all business operations. This discipline may include mainframe systems, compute resources, storage solutions, collaboration tools, and specialized platforms that enable system interoperability. As the bedrock layer of the technology stack, Infrastructure Engineering creates the resilient, secure, and scalable environments upon which all other technology services depend, balancing the maintenance of established systems with the adoption of modern cloud-native approaches to drive organizational agility and innovation. Requirements

  • 3 years of infrastructure engineering/systems administration experience preferred.
  • If specializing in a certain domain of infrastructure engineering, proven expertise in that specific area with ability to work across related systems.
  • Demonstrated track record of infrastructure expertise including the ability to understand system concepts necessary to do the job effectively, demonstrate willingness, cooperation, and concern for business issues, and possess in-depth knowledge of immediate infrastructure systems worked on.
  • Deep proficiency in the z/OS Communications Server environment.
  • Hands-on experience with SNA (Systems Network Architecture), VTAM (Virtual Telecommunication Access Method), and APPN/Enterprise Extender for SNA-over-IP communication.
  • Familiarity with standard mainframe interfaces like TSO/ISPF, JCL (Job Control Language), and IOF (Interactive Output Facility).
  • Advanced configuration and management of the z/OS TCP/IP stack, routing protocols (OSPF, EIGRP), and Layer 2/Layer 3 integration.
  • Ability to execute and analyze complex VTAM network traces and sniffer/TCP/IP packet captures to isolate bottlenecks.
  • Working knowledge of modern enterprise hardware and software, including switches, firewalls, load balancers, and 3270 emulators.
  • Customization of the z/OS Policy Agent and Application Transparent Transport Layer Security for network policy and encryption rules.
  • Administration of digital certificates, keyrings, SSH, and SSL/TLS protocols.
  • Support for enterprise file-moving tools like SFTP, FTPS, and Connect:Direct.
  • Competency in REXX, CLIST, Python, or Linux BASH for workflow automation and generating SMF (System Management Facilities) reports.
  • Experience utilizing IBM NetView, IBM or equivalent performance and capacity-planning tools.
  • Strong communication skills that enable clear, concise interactions with team members and stakeholders.
  • Ability to document infrastructure work in an accessible manner, ask clarifying questions on requirements, and actively listen ensures seamless collaboration.

  • Proven problem-solving skills including infrastructure debugging abilities, allowing you to determine source of issues in unfamiliar systems or environments, ability to recognize and solve repetitive infrastructure problems proactively and permanently, recognize mistakes using them as learning opportunities, and break down large infrastructure problems into smaller, more manageable ones.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in work experience plus 2 years of infrastructure engineering experience.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for performing analysis, design, and implementation of infrastructure components across various domains (which may include mainframe systems, collaboration tools, compute resources, storage solutions, or other specialized areas) with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Define and implement technical requirements for infrastructure provisioning, configuration management, and operational support using appropriate automation methodologies.
  • Enhance infrastructure deployment workflows to improve system reliability, resource utilization, and operational efficiency while resolving infrastructure issues of intermediate complexity.
  • Configure and optimize physical, virtualized, and cloud-based infrastructure to ensure high availability, performance, and operational resilience across multiple technology domains.
  • Implement and maintain infrastructure monitoring, capacity planning, and incident response procedures while ensuring adherence to security protocols and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with software, platform, and operations teams to align infrastructure capabilities with application requirements and business needs.
  • Provide technical guidance to Associate and Sr Associate Infrastructure Engineers while contributing to infrastructure standards and best practices.
  • Evaluate new infrastructure technologies and methodologies to identify opportunities for operational improvements and technology modernization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
