About The Position

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Machinist. In this role you will, under limited supervision, operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. You will be responsible for applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties and layout and machining procedures.

Requirements

HS diploma or equivalent with 5 or more years of recent verifiable work experience as a machinist or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

Completion of a certified machinist apprenticeship program.
Knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, layout techniques and shop safety.
General computer skills.

Responsibilities

Program, set-up and operate conventional, special-purpose and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC)machining including lathes, mills, surface grinders, multi-axis CNC equipment and water jet cutting and wire fed electrical discharge machines (EDM) to machine parts to specifications.
Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow and depth andangle of cut.
Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to calculate dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
Fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts by utilizing programming tools such as CAD/CAM and MDI systems.
Enter commands to retrieve, input, edit and validate computerized machine control media.
Fit and assemble machined parts and weldments into complete units as well as troubleshoot fabrication issues.
Measure, examine or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications using precision instruments.
Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines.
Select and operate necessary cutting tools, hand measuring tools, power tools and horizontal and vertical band saws.
Conduct housekeeping of shop and equipment.
Other tasks as assigned by management.
