About The Position

Inspects, maintains, and repairs locomotives in accordance with FRA regulations. This is a second shift position, working from 1500 to 2300, with days off on Saturday and Sunday. The initial pay ranges between $28.31/hr - $31.85/hr based on experience, with a salary increase to $35.39/hr upon qualification, typically achieved within 6 months to a year.

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED and One year certificate from college or technical school; or 4 years heavy mechanical repair experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience reading blueprints.
  • Ability to understand both verbal and written communications – both general and technical.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must be qualified welder.
  • Must have current valid driver’s license.
  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly.
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
  • Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of units to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
  • Performs mechanical inspection on locomotives and repairs defects to conform to FRA regulations.
  • Tests locomotives for performance by use of load box.
  • Replaces brake shoes on locomotives.
  • Disassembles and rebuilds locomotive trucks and replaces wheel sets and traction motors.
  • Repairs and rebuilds diesel engines, air compressors, and many other locomotive components.
  • Disassembles and reassembles locomotives and machinery.
