Machinist

Ulysses Inc.San Francisco, CA
$75,000 - $110,000Onsite

About The Position

Ulysses is seeking a CNC Machinist to join their machine shop in San Francisco. This role involves making a variety of parts for autonomous robots, from one-off prototypes to production runs of components like pressure vessels. The machinist will be responsible for the entire process, including CAM programming in Fusion 360, operating Haas machines, measuring parts, and iterating on programs to ensure repeatability. The position offers the opportunity to work closely with engineers, provide feedback on designs, and build custom fixtures. This role is ideal for someone with a few years of experience who is looking for a dynamic environment with diverse challenges, or a strong recent graduate from a machining or manufacturing technology program or apprenticeship who can already CAM and measure parts.

Requirements

  • Strong in Fusion 360 CAM, capable of building toolpaths and understanding tool selection, feeds and speeds, stepover and engagement.
  • Comfortable operating Haas machines, including setups, offsets, work coordinates, tool library, proving out programs safely, and reading/editing G-code at the control.
  • Strong metrology fundamentals, including familiarity with calipers, micrometers, indicators, gauge pins, and bore gauges; understanding of repeatability, tool wear, and thermal effects; ability to inspect to print.
  • Ability to close the loop between measuring and programming, knowing when to adjust offsets, toolpaths, or setups.
  • Ability to read and work from GD&T (datums, position, profile).
  • 2-3 years of hands-on CNC experience in a machine shop, or a strong record from a machining/manufacturing technology program or apprenticeship.
  • Some 5-axis experience, or the willingness to learn quickly.
  • Solid instincts on fixturing and the ability to make parts repeatable.
  • Ability to navigate CAD in SolidWorks or Onshape.
  • Demonstrable machining work from the past.
  • Obsessed with quality.
  • Embrace a 'gotta go fast' mindset and refuse to settle for 'good enough'.
  • Capable of working autonomously in a dynamic environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Simultaneous 5-axis toolpath programming in Fusion 360.
  • Hands-on CMM programming and operation.
  • Comfortable editing G-code directly and building or tweaking post-processors.
  • Experience working in an MES or shop-floor traveler system.
  • Experience machining aluminum, stainless, and plastics for marine or subsea environments.
  • Exposure to production runs (line balancing, running to takt, first article inspection).
  • Familiarity with ISO-9001 quality processes and gauge R&R.
  • Sheet metal, welding, or general fabrication skills.
  • Licensed forklift operator.
  • An obsession with good workflows, processes, and organization.

Responsibilities

  • CAM the job in Fusion 360, including building toolpaths with sound tooling, workholding, and strategy choices.
  • Perform 3-axis and 5-axis milling and turning.
  • Set up, prove out, and run Haas machines, including managing offsets, work coordinates, and tool library.
  • Inspect and qualify own parts using calipers, micrometers, indicators, bore gauges, height gauge, and CMM.
  • Close the loop by adjusting programs and setups based on measurement feedback, including tweaking toolpaths and feeds/speeds.
  • Design and build workholding and fixturing for both one-off parts and production runs.
  • Work directly with engineers to provide DFM feedback and make parts production-ready.
  • Maintain the machine shop, including preventative maintenance, managing tooling and material stock, coolant, and organization.
  • Help build out processes, documentation, and quality practices as the shop scales.
