About The Position

Wyman-Gordon is a worldwide supplier to the aerospace and industrial gas turbine markets. We hold quality accreditations for all the major airframe and engine manufacturers for both civil and military applications. Wyman-Gordon creates rotating closed-die forgings which are critical for aerospace and land-based gas turbines. Wyman-Gordon also manufactures structural forgings for airframe, nuclear, petrochemical, power generation, and space applications. Located in Ontario, CA, Summit Machine, LLC specializes in the rough and finish machining of super alloys for the aerospace, commercial, defense, power, and petroleum industries. Complex components include nickel base, titanium, stainless steel, aluminum and carbon steels with parts ranging in size from 2” OD – 120” OD. The Level 1 Machinist operates 2-5 axis CNC lathe machines, which requires machine setup including preparing and setting up fixtures and cutting tools, loading and adjusting CNC programs and offsets, performing inspections and basic preventative machine maintenance such as coolant and lube levels and area cleanliness. Competencies include the ability to use more advanced quality inspection tools and techniques. Must be able to read prints and have experience with common CNC G and M codes. This position is designed to support 2nd shift operations (12:15pm – 8:45pm, Mon - Fri), on the G&L machines, however the selected individual may train on 1st shift from 4:15am – 12:45pm, M – F for approximately 3 months, or until able to demonstrate an ability to perform the job with minimal intervention. Shift differential will apply upon schedule change if applicable. The selected individual may be asked to flex on other machines to support business needs.

The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Familiarity with all tools and equipment in a machine shop, including Micrometers, drill press, tool grinders, power saws, belt sanders, various measuring tools, shovel, broom, tape readers and punches, etc.
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
No experience required for entry-level, however must be able to demonstrate a willingness to learn and retain information.

Nice To Haves

One-year certificate from a college or technical trade school is preferred.
Experience in manufacturing preferred.

Responsibilities

Work safely under functional safety guidelines such as PPE and equipment interaction.
Reads blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements
Measures, marks, and scribes’ dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining
Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines
Uses overhead cranes and/or forklifts to move parts and rings
Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, and write or edit computerized machine control media
Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required
Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications
Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data
Works with others to help troubleshoot machine issues
Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.
Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
Accomplishes organizational goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
Maintains production tracking
Cleanliness/Organization (6S)
Maintain safe operation of hand tools, calipers, micrometers, Indicators & finders
Maintain proper maintenance of area and equipment, observe proper coolant levels, oil and lubes and overall housekeeping.
Maintain proper part loading
Maintain machine control (Distance to Go, Feed Override, etc.)
Maintain machine safety (LOTO recognition, interlocks, etc.)
Machinist related cross training, such as, but not limited to Operating lather, deburr & edge-breaking
Maintain part protection (part handling and chip clearing)
Start and Stop the program correctly
Maintains productivity & quality, by but not limited to, meeting production goals, reading and filling out checks sheets and inspection reports, filling out Productions Incident Reports (PIR), filling out In Process Inspection Reports (IPIR).
