Amentum is NASA’s largest engineering solutions provider working together with NASA at centers across the United States. They have an exciting opportunity for a Machinist III to join their team with the Department. This is a JETS II CBA position with Amentum. The Machinist III will plan, layout, machine and assemble to precision tolerances parts and tools designed to meet exacting standards and specifications consisting of mechanical or specialty apparatus. They will set and operate a variety of machining equipment such as engine and bench lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, job borers, grinders, hones, gear cutters, and drill presses, to fully utilize all functions of the machines. The role involves planning and determining the sequence of machining operations, number of cuts required to obtain required finishes and tolerances, determining cutting tools to be used and method of holding and aligning work. They will make complete layout on parts involving compound angles and exacting mating part work, to check for sufficient stock and for reference during machining. The Machinist III will set up machines to completely and independently perform any operations within their capacity, select mount and align various specialized machine attachments and standard or improvised tooling, and determine, set, and adjust machine speeds, feeds and depth of cut. They will select, mount, and fasten cutting tools for specified finish and best performance consistent with the type of material being machined, and check their own machine set up and parts run for conformance to blueprint specifications. The role also includes grinding own tool bits and drills, working from detailed drawings, templates, sketches, assembly blueprints, or oral instructions, and offering technical direction to customers on pre-fabrication reviews, modifications, or repairs. They will operate machines to perform typical operations such as chasing all types of single and multiple external tapers; turning, boring, reaming, facing, slotting, etc., for any type of machine fit; machining parts involving compound angles or concentric and coordinated concave or convex surfaces to exacting tolerances. The Machinist III will also be able to program and operate in at least one CNC language, train less experienced machinists, and perform general inspection of work. Maintaining a clean and organized work area, organizing and properly storing inventory, materials, and safety equipment, and using lift equipment as required are also part of the responsibilities. Performing related duties as required is also expected.
