About The Position

Acuren is currently recruiting a Machinist to join our Materials Testing Laboratory team in Cambridge. Our lab provides a wide range of materials testing services, including chemical, mechanical, and physical testing, metallurgical investigations, and weld qualifications. This is a great opportunity for someone with machining experience or related technical skills who enjoys hands-on, problem-solving work and wants to contribute to a collaborative, world-class laboratory environment. Position will be based in our Cambridge location.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of materials and processes used in industrial applications
  • Knowledge in the use of equipment including: verniers, calipers and micrometers; band saws, angle grinders, surface grinders, surface grinders; manual and CNC lathes, mills; and torch plasma cutting
  • Ability to use their hands skillfully and quickly
  • Mechanical ability
  • Ability to estimate and measure sizes and lengths accurately
  • Strength, stamina and the use of proper lifting techniques required to handle items weighing up to 25 kilograms
  • Ability to work independently at tasks that require concentration as well as physical effort
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Consistently demonstrates an understanding of, and compliance with, responsibilities under the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Acts and Regulations, ISO Systems (e.g. 9001, 1725, etc.) and Acuren Safey and Quality Management Systems, policies and procedures
  • A high school diploma or equivalency
  • Enrollment in a machinist apprenticeship program from a recognized technical institution.

  • Appropriate job related safety certifications are considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Machinist Foreman, the Machinist I provides assistance and support by setting up and operating precision metal cutting and grinding machines such as lathes, milling machines, saws, drills and grinders, and preparing test coupons, samples or components made from metals, plastics, rubber textiles and fibreglass, while following Acuren’s standard operating procedures and process maps.
  • Completing scheduled and routine maintenance and logging updates in database
  • Greasing, oiling, and lubricating equipment as required
  • Cleaning machining cuttings and debris on a daily basis prior to leaving for the day
  • Monitoring the need for equipment repair, maintenance, and replacement
  • Identifying and bringing all issues which relate to the function, safety, and operation of machinery and identify potential problems to the attention of the Machine Shop Foreman
  • Machine test coupons and specimens to dimensional tolerances as outlined in specific standards for required test
  • Cutting and preparing samples exactly as instructed from other qualified personnel including engineers, technologists, technicians or NDT personnel
  • Ensuring machined samples are de-burned and all sharp edges removed, and are identified with accurate markings including sample ID, job number, and reference information as per quality assurance program
  • Providing creative suggestions toward the development and construction of jigging for unusual testing and for new test procedures
  • Identifying samples for storage and disposal and ensuring all extra pieces are properly handled, discarded or provided to the appropriate technologist
  • Placing orders for shop supplies
  • Operating the forklift to move large samples and equipment
  • Other work duties as assigned.
