About The Position

Outside machinists are responsible for installing, grooming, testing, and repairing a ship's major mechanical components and systems. This work can occur on commercial or naval ships in various stages of new construction, overhaul, or repair. Ship components involved in this work can include anything from steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults and weapons systems, periscopes to laundry, food service, or refrigeration equipment. Outside machinists operate a wide variety of tools and machinery ranging from wrenches and screwdrivers to complex and sophisticated equipment such as saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, and lathes.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at extreme heights.
  • Ability to work in small, tight, or confined spaces.
  • Ability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more.
  • Ability to work while repeatedly reaching overhead.
  • Ability to work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in areas with radiation.
  • Ability to take and pass a respirator fit test.
  • Ability to work assigned shift as production needs.
  • Ability to take and pass a Physical Agility Test.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior Mechanical experience such as Automotive Repair, Plant Maintenance, Machinery Installation/Repair.
  • Successful completion of a technical/vocational program in Machining, Diesel Technology, Automotive, HVAC, Mechanical.
