The Caterpillar Remanufacturing Division of Mississippi currently has an opening for a Machining Apprentice located in Corinth, Mississippi. In this hands-on apprenticeship, you will build practical machining and remanufacturing skills by operating manual and CNC equipment, performing salvage repairs, and rotating through disassembly, reclaim, assembly, and engine-testing processes. Working alongside experienced team members, you will learn to interpret blueprints, follow quality and torque requirements, safely handle components, and support a world-class safety, 5S, and contamination-control environment.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or participating in the NEMCC TIGER Apprenticeship Program.
  • Individuals must be currently enrolled in or studying within an Associate Degree program in Diesel Power Technology, Precision Machining, or another related discipline.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints
  • Ability to read and follow standard work or work instructions
  • Must have a flexible schedule.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience using hoists.
  • Knowledge of engines and components.
  • Experience with basic tooling, including hand tools, air tools, gauges, and pneumatic tools.
  • Previous machining experience.
  • Experience using electric or pneumatic tools and torque wrenches
  • Knowledge of standard assembly tools
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications such as Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Knowledgeable of engines, cylinders and other engine components
  • Experience using a powered crane or hoist system
  • Previous disassembly or assembly of engines or component experience
  • Experience using diagnostic equipment
  • Prior experience machining parts, using salvage tools such as tap guns, manual drills or torch for remove of bolts and plugs; experience installing inserts to repair damaged thread holes

Responsibilities

  • Work in a fast-paced environment focused on safety and quality.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and self-motivation.

  • Interpret blueprints.
  • Perform quality checks based on standard work requirements.
  • Understand and follow torque requirements and processes.
  • Operate hand tools, cordless tools, gauges, and vibration tools.
  • Learn upstream and downstream processes, including core acceptance criteria, reusability guidelines, salvage decisions, and the business impact of those decisions.
  • Operate a variety of manual machines and repair salvage issues, such as removing broken bolts, drilling and tapping holes, and installing inserts.
  • Maintain world-class safety, 5S, and contamination-control standards through strong attention to detail and self-motivation.
  • Use an overhead hoist to move large components, as required.
  • Load and unload parts.
  • Wear a detail suit with hood and/or respirator, as required.
  • Operate heavy equipment, reach trucks, sit-down forklifts, overhead cranes, and/or electric pallet jacks to move parts in and out of the area, as required.
  • Operate CNC controls and programs, as required.
  • Operate automated packaging equipment, as required.
  • Check incoming material and enter data, as required.
  • Cross-train in other Salary Grade 2 positions based on business needs and upon meeting the applicable basic qualifications and physical requirements. Examples of Salary Grade 2 positions include Disassembly 1, Cleaning 1 and 2, Assembly 1 and 2, and Logistics 1.
  • Use various computer systems, including email, on a regular basis.
  • Work independently in an environment without close supervision.
