About The Position

Conducts system checks and walk throughs for system completeness in accordance with system diagrams and drawings. Supports commissioning as well as tests equipment in accordance with established test procedures. Conducts the day to day operations of all ship’s systems and equipment. Repairs and maintains ship’s systems and equipment including but not limited to compressors, purifiers, heat exchangers, valves, engines, cranes, and winches. Conducts bunkering of fuel and lube oils as well as the transferring of fluids from one tank to another. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a related field or graduate of a Diesel or Aircraft Mechanic training school, or three years in any of the following Navy ratings: MM (BT), AD, CM, EN, GS, HT, or MR.
  • Ability to read and comprehend mechanical drawings, technical manuals, and hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Capable of assembling/installing complex mechanical systems while meeting alignment criteria of systems and equipment.
  • Proficient in the use of precision measurement tools.
  • Understanding of both imperial and metric measuring systems.
  • Shop mathematic skills with an understanding of and able to work with decimals and fractions.
  • Ability to lineup machinery equipment such as but not limited to fuel, water, and air systems to support the machinery plant operations on board ships.
  • Able to perform initial light offs of ship board systems and conduct testing in accordance with test procedures and technical manuals.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and take corrective action when systems and equipment are not operating within the designed parameters.
  • Ability to stand watch while equipment is in operation, make rounds, and take readings.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be able to work any shift.
  • Able to understand written and verbal instructions, hear warning signals, and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations, and warnings.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and test all on board systems and equipment.
  • Support commissioning.
  • Assemble and install complex piping systems.
  • Support machinery plant operations including fuel, water, and air systems.
  • Conduct initial ship board system light offs and system verifications.
  • Troubleshoot and repair equipment when not operating according to specifications.
  • Stand watch, make rounds, take readings, and correct deficiencies in operating systems when deviations in designed parameters occur.
  • Other job duties may be assigned relevant to the trade.
  • Perform housekeeping, including sweeping, in all work areas.
  • Attend safety, quality, and/or process improvement meetings as required.
