About The Position

This position supports manufacturing operations by supplying tooling and machine parts. Safely performs various phases of operations necessary to cut, shape, polish, size, or grind metal work pieces to precise dimensions and finishes. Machine Tool Operators may be trained in the following processes: Overbeck and CNC ID Grinding, Polishing, Surface Grinding, Bench Work, Internal Honing, Material Handling, Punch Blanks, EDM, and Inspection. Machine Tool Operators fill out appropriate paperwork, enters information concerning the product on the computer and moves to the next position on the Work Order Tracking System. Machine Tool Operators will also assist in shop duties/tasks with the guidance of the Technical Coordinator or machinist when needed.

Requirements

  • Must be able to understand English.
  • Must be able to read, write, and perform math calculations and be able to recognize improbable results.
  • Must not have any written disciplinary action in the past twelve months.
  • Must pass written test with a 85% or higher to be considered for an interview.
  • Must have good housekeeping and organizational skills.
  • Must supply own hand tools (list will be provided by machine shop leadership).
  • Must have the ability to work independently without continual supervision.
  • Must have previous education or experience in machining or production machine operation.
  • Must not have any written disciplinary action regarding attendance in the past two years.
  • Must be able to use measuring devices to the nearest 0.0001”.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Must have good communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Safely performs various phases of operations necessary to cut, shape, polish, size, or grind metal work pieces to precise dimensions and finishes.
  • Operates Overbeck and CNC ID Grinders to grind cylindrical and tapered surfaces of rotating steel or carbide workpieces.
  • Reviews blueprints and work orders to plan sequence of operations.
  • Inspects and measures dimensions to 0.0001” to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Cuts punch blanks per job requests, de-burrs, and boxes for heat treat.
  • Maintains equipment, completes preventative maintenance associated with equipment and area, and engages in 5’s, Kaizen, and Safety initiatives.
  • Sets up, maintains, and operates polishing and lapping machines to size and polish workpieces.
  • Cleans dies with acetone and Q-tips as needed.
  • Manufactures spinners: part-off blanks with band saw, operate spinner cutting machine, and heat-treat spinners with torch.
  • Inspects and polishes multi-cup tooling.
  • Chrome-plates various workpieces.
  • Polishes, de-burrs, and radii new and rework tooling.
  • Operates and maintains distilling machine.
  • Operates and maintains sandblasting machine.
  • Assembles feed magazines used in Production Department Metal Parts areas per provided assembly prints.
  • Repairs assembled feed magazines by inspecting, replacing worn and or damaged components.
  • Cuts, shapes, and polishes magazine inserts as instructed and tests function of feed magazines.
  • Sets up, maintains, and operates the Manual and Auto Honing equipment to size and polish the internal surfaces of workpieces.
  • Sets up, maintains, and operates the surface grinders to grind surfaces of workpieces to the correct finish and dimensions.
  • Dresses, mounts, balances, and trues grinding wheels.
  • Sets up and operates EDMs (Electrical Discharge Machines).
  • Downloads programs to machines and verifies to standard.
  • Reviews work orders, burn-sheet, program, and blueprints of product to plan operations.
  • Positions and secures electrode in holder, verifying concentricity, alignment, and depth, using dial indicators and calipers.
  • Builds electrodes on the CNC lathe as needed.
  • Measures and checks against print, visually inspects, correctly marks, and stores completed electrodes.
  • Maintains inventory of raw materials, blanks, oils, and supplies for building finished parts.
  • Cleans area by keeping tools picked up and organized.
  • Cleans machines, sweeps and mops as needed.
  • Wipes up grease and spills as needed.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains 5-S.
