About The Position

Arts & Science is seeking an experienced Machine Shop Specialist to oversee the design and fabrication of experimentation parts using manual and CNC lathes and milling machines, drill press, band saw and table saw, etc. Collaborate with and advise faculty, researchers, students, and staff on the design and fabrication of parts needed for various experiments. Manage the shop's day to day operations, ensure equipment is operated safely in accordance with manufacturer specifications and NYU Arts & Science (A&S) policy as well as ensure that shop's equipment is maintained in good operating order. Discuss and advise on projects with A&S faculty and staff, including design, cost estimates, procurement, and scheduling.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years of progressively responsible experience including supervising safety and operations.
  • Must have experience with micro-machining techniques, rapid prototyping equipment, manual and CNC milling machines, lathes, drill press, band saw and other standard shop equipment; with CAD/CAM and G-code/M-code.
  • Ability to plan and manage a variety of projects, control costs and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of manual and CNC lathe and milling operations, and be highly skilled in setting up CNC machine tools.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and Autocad.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Manufacturing/Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Experience with specific materials (e.g., aluminum, steel, plastics, exotic alloys).
  • Proven experience as a CNC Machinist or similar role.
  • Proficient in setting up and operating various CNC machines (e.g., Haas, Hurco).
