About The Position

The Large Power Systems Division in Lafayette, IN currently has an opening for a Machine Shop Quality Technician. In this role you will be responsible for providing assembly and machine shop quality support for suspected nonconforming machined parts; accomplished through the inspection and documentation of engine parts with focus on stop capability. You will compare the non-conforming part to the Caterpillar print, applicable quality standard and document any variations as it relates to the form, fit, and/or function of the part. Upon discovery of a nonconformance, you will document the discrepancy, provide visual proof of the nonconformance, reference the applicable quality standard, and draft a system alert which is communicated back to internal support teams along with the supplier. In addition, you may also be responsible for ensuring that discrepant materials are quarantined in a timely manner. Other activities include processing customer returned material, participating in external and internal audits.

Requirements

  • Must successfully pass BAT (Basic Assembly Training) or BMT (Basic Machining Training) for both written and hands-on exercises.

Responsibilities

  • Providing assembly and machine shop quality support for suspected nonconforming machined parts.
  • Inspecting and documenting engine parts with focus on stop capability.
  • Comparing non-conforming parts to Caterpillar prints and applicable quality standards.
  • Documenting variations related to the form, fit, and/or function of the part.
  • Documenting discrepancies, providing visual proof, referencing applicable quality standards, and drafting system alerts.
  • Communicating non-conformances to internal support teams and suppliers.
  • Ensuring discrepant materials are quarantined in a timely manner.
  • Processing customer returned material.
  • Participating in external and internal audits.
  • Learning Caterpillar Systems and using them appropriately (eMachine, AQE, etc.).
  • Reacting to operations line calls for problematic parts.
  • Reading Caterpillar prints and understanding GD&T.
  • Troubleshooting issues with parts.
  • Utilizing gages to check part conformance.
