About The Position

The Maintenance Technician troubleshoots, repairs, rebuilds, and maintains multi-spindle automatic screw machines in a machine shop, including Acme-Gridley and Greenlee 6- and 8-spindle bar machines. The role supports safe, accurate, and efficient production by diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, lubrication, and electrical problems; performing preventive maintenance; and completing major machine rebuilds. The technician identifies root causes of equipment breakdowns, quality problems, and recurring failures; repairs or replaces machine components and attachments; and responds to breakdowns to minimize downtime. Rebuild work includes disassembling, inspecting, measuring, reconditioning or replacing components, restoring machine alignment and timing to manufacturer specifications, and testing rebuilt machines in coordination with set-up and quality personnel. The role may also involve fabricating replacement parts with manual machine tools, maintaining bar feed and stock support equipment, documenting work and parts, sourcing spares, and following safety procedures when servicing or moving heavy equipment. Work is performed in a machine shop environment with exposure to noise, cutting oils, coolant, metal chips, and moving machinery. The job involves extended periods of standing and walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and climbing; lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; and moving heavier components with lifting equipment. Manual dexterity and good vision are needed for precision assembly and measurement. Required PPE includes approved safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, hearing protection, and other required protective equipment.

Requirements

  • At least five years of industrial maintenance or machine repair experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting, repairing, and rebuilding cam-driven multi-spindle automatic screw machines; Acme-Gridley and/or Greenlee 6- and 8-spindle models are preferred.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical power transmission, including gears, cams, clutches, brakes, bearings, shafts, and couplings.
  • Working knowledge of machine timing, indexing, and spindle carrier operation.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints, machine manuals, schematics, and parts diagrams.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, dial and test indicators, bore gauges, and feeler gauges.
  • Working knowledge of industrial hydraulics, pneumatics, and lubrication systems.
  • Basic industrial electrical troubleshooting skills, including three-phase motors and control circuits.
  • Ability to operate manual lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses to fabricate and repair parts.
  • Knowledge of lockout/tagout and safe work practices around heavy machinery.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of company indoctrination, successful completion of safety training programs including lockout/tagout, and understanding of the company Quality System and processes.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or alternate shifts as needed to support production.
  • Ability to perform the listed essential duties, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.
  • Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb for extended periods; lift and carry up to 50 pounds; and use lifting equipment to move heavier components.
  • Manual dexterity and good vision for precision assembly and measurement.
  • Wear approved safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, hearing protection, and other required PPE in working areas.

Nice To Haves

  • Tool and die experience.
  • Automotive machine repair or engine rebuilding experience.
  • Experience operating, setting up, or repairing manual or single-spindle screw machines, such as Brown & Sharpe or Davenport.
  • Welding and fabrication skills.
  • Vocational, technical, or apprenticeship training in industrial maintenance, machine repair, or machining.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, lubrication, and electrical failures on Acme-Gridley and Greenlee 6- and 8-spindle automatic screw machines.

  • Repair or replace machine components, including spindles, bearings, collets, feed fingers, clutches, brakes, gears, cams, cam rolls, slides, and drive belts.
  • Troubleshoot indexing, spindle carrier lockup, timing, feed and chucking, and cross-slide and end-tool-slide problems.
  • Repair and adjust threading, cross-drilling, pick-off, and cutoff attachments.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns to minimize production downtime.
  • Disassemble, inspect, rebuild, and reassemble multi-spindle screw machines and major assemblies.
  • Measure wear and determine whether components can be reconditioned or need replacement.
  • Restore machine alignment, clearances, bearing preload, and timing to manufacturer specifications.
  • Fabricate or machine replacement parts with manual lathes, mills, and grinders when parts are obsolete or unavailable.
  • Test run rebuilt machines and coordinate with set-up and quality personnel to confirm parts meet specifications.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, including lubrication, inspection, adjustment, and replacement of wear components.
  • Maintain coolant, oil, and lubrication systems, including filters, pumps, and chip conveyors.
  • Recommend preventive maintenance improvements based on equipment history and failure trends.
