About The Position

The Machine Operator II is responsible for applying metal processing to customer orders and accurately processing material according to work order specifications, specifically focusing on coil slitting operations. This role requires the use of advanced machinery and an advanced level of skill in warehouse and processing equipment. Key responsibilities include ensuring that all processing and coil slitting equipment is maintained in a safe and clean condition, and that processing and slitting areas are kept clean, safe, and orderly. The operator must complete all required information entry accurately and perform any other assigned tasks. The position involves setting up, operating, and monitoring various material handling and coil slitting equipment, inspecting and verifying products, installing slitting tooling, and ensuring product quality. Communication with sales representatives regarding order changes, making recommendations for process improvements, performing preventive maintenance, and managing material identification tags are also part of the role. The operator is expected to balance workload, assist with clean-up, packaging, banding, and labeling, operate weighing scales, identify non-conforming material, provide feedback on machine efficiency and product quality, and complete production logs while adhering to safety standards and supporting lean manufacturing and quality initiatives.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1–2 years of machine operation experience and coil slitting
  • Ability to read and write
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs
  • Basic math skills
  • Experience using handheld measuring tools

Nice To Haves

  • Previous warehouse or manufacturing experience, preferably in the metals industry
  • Previous coil slitting or metal processing experience is highly preferred
  • Forklift experience
  • Computer literacy

Responsibilities

  • Must be certified in the material handler position
  • Set up, operate, and maintain cranes, forklifts, and other material handling equipment
  • Set up, operate, and monitor coil slitting equipment in accordance with work order specifications
  • Pull, inspect, and verify product before processing
  • Properly and safely set up equipment to run material according to set‑up note specifications
  • Install and verify slitting tooling, knives, spacers, and arbors as required for coil slitting jobs
  • Process set‑up notes according to work order specifications
  • Verify that product meets set‑up note specifications per written work instructions and record measurements (sampling plan)
  • Inspect slit coils for width, burrs, camber, and overall quality during and after processing
  • Communicate with appropriate sales representative regarding changes or clarification to orders
  • Make recommendations to improve processes in the manufacturing and coil slitting area
  • Perform equipment preventive maintenance, including slitting line components
  • Properly enter/delete material identification tags per written instructions
  • Balance immediate workload, recognizing when help is needed and when to assist or direct others
  • Perform general clean‑up of processing and slitting areas
  • Assist in the packaging, banding, and labeling of slit coils per written work instructions and work orders
  • Maintain issued measurement equipment in proper working condition
  • Properly operate weighing scales and record inspection measurements
  • Identify, record, and segregate scrap and any non‑conforming material
  • Provide feedback to supervision regarding machine efficiency, slitting accuracy, and product quality
  • Perform quality checks during machine operation to ensure proper function
  • Complete production and productivity logs and reconcile production data
  • Complete job responsibilities in a manner that does not put self or others in unsafe situations
  • Assist in activities related to lean manufacturing and/or quality initiatives
