About The Position

Milwaukee Tool is seeking a Machine Design Engineer-Automation to join their Test Automation Group (TAG). This role involves developing innovative automated test systems to support new product development across North America and global laboratories. The engineer will collaborate with New Product Development, Reliability, Quality, and Laboratory teams to define requirements, develop solutions, and manage automation projects from concept to deployment. The position requires a capable technical contributor who can develop automated test solutions with growing independence, make sound design decisions, identify project risks, and communicate proactively with potential solutions. The ideal candidate will have a blend of mechanical and electrical skills, with experience in CAD, engineering calculations, system integration, and electrical design. This role emphasizes being disruptive through developing automated test systems, integrating and troubleshooting hardware, collaborating with cross-functional teams, managing project scope and requirements, and creating system documentation. The engineer will partner with vendors, analyze project risks, and escalate obstacles with solutions. They will manage multiple projects, apply structured problem-solving, and demonstrate ownership through proactive communication and data-supported recommendations. Continuous learning and technical depth are encouraged.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
2+ years of experience developing automated systems, industrial equipment, test systems, or complex engineering solutions.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and engineering problem-solving abilities.
Hands-on experience integrating, commissioning, and debugging industrial systems.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects or technical assignments with limited supervision.
Ability to assess technical options and provide sound recommendations based on data, project scope, cost, schedule, safety, and long-term maintainability.
Strong written, verbal, presentation, and technical communication skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with technical teams, cross-functional stakeholders, vendors, and global laboratory teams.
Willingness to travel internationally, less than 10%.
Experience in mechanical design utilizing CAD, such as SolidWorks or NX.
Experience integrating mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical subsystems.
Understanding of machine design, statics, dynamics, FEA, materials engineering, fluid power systems, thermodynamics, and manufacturing processes.
Ability to evaluate design tradeoffs and apply engineering judgment to mechanical system design.
Experience creating and maintaining engineering drawings, models, assemblies, and system documentation.
Experience in electrical design utilizing CAD, such as SolidWorks Electrical.
Knowledge of measurement systems, sensor technologies, signal conditioning, data acquisition systems, and uncertainty analysis.
Experience with industrial power systems, machine safety systems, panel design, power conversion, instrumentation, grounding, and electrical protection.
Experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting, including controls architecture, debugging, and new system development.
Ability to evaluate electrical design tradeoffs and apply engineering judgment to controls, measurement, and power system design.

Responsibilities

Develop automated test systems to support new product development, with growing ownership of project scope, requirements, design, build, integration, and deployment activities.
Integrate and troubleshoot physical hardware, sensors, measurement devices, safety systems, and motion devices across domestic and global test labs.
Support project scope discussions and system requirements development in collaboration with New Product Development, Test Lab, Reliability Engineering, and cross-functional stakeholders.
Interpret project charters and leverage project objectives to support engineering decisions.
Create and maintain system documentation including BOMs, operating instructions, risk assessments, validation documentation, and design review materials.
Partner with vendors for system procurement, technical collaboration, costing, and schedule management.
Analyze project risks and communicate concerns related to cost, schedule, procurement, design maturity, quality, and safety.
Proactively escalate project obstacles and roadblocks while bringing potential solutions and mitigation options to stakeholders.
Prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality, communication, and execution discipline.
Apply structured problem-solving and root cause analysis methods to troubleshoot issues and evaluate alternative solutions.
Demonstrate ownership of project success through proactive communication, risk awareness, follow-through, and data-supported recommendations.

Create and maintain CAD models and drawings for system assemblies, components, fixtures, and products.
Perform engineering calculations and analysis for mechanical components and assemblies, including static, force, torque, inertial, energy, and basic FEA evaluations.
Specify materials, surface finishes, heat treatments, and coatings based on application needs, stresses, wear, and tolerances, with support as needed for higher-complexity decisions.
Integrate mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical subsystems into automated test platforms.
Work collaboratively with designers, technicians, machinists, vendors, and cross-functional teams throughout design, fabrication, integration, and deployment.
Create and maintain electrical schematics for system power, safety circuits, measurement systems, controls, and physical panel layouts.
Evaluate measurement devices to ensure optimized measurement uncertainty.
Collaborate with calibration service providers to validate system measurement performance.
Perform calculations involving power distribution, filtering, signal conditioning, current capacity, power conversion, grounding, and electrical safety.
Support PLC, HMI, motion control, data acquisition, and industrial communication system development, troubleshooting, and validation.
Support electrical design reviews and provide constructive technical feedback related to measurement systems, industrial controls, and electrical architecture.
Serve as a dependable technical contributor on medium-complexity automation projects.
Drive assigned project work with minimal guidance while maintaining alignment with project scope, schedule, quality, and safety requirements.
Provide constructive design feedback and technical guidance to peers during design reviews and project discussions.
Collaborate with teams internally and cross-functionally to solve problems.
Communicate project status, technical risks, design tradeoffs, and recommended next steps clearly to stakeholders.
Use TAG, laboratory, and NPD processes to support project execution, design maturity, and validation planning.
