About The Position

Under general supervision of the Nurse Manager and the Chief Medical Officer, the nurse or medical assistant will be responsible for promoting the health and well-being of patients within the outpatient clinic setting. The nurse or medical assistant is generally focused on providing outpatient preventive care, helping patients who may be recovering from acute illness or injury, or receiving treatment for chronic health issues.

Requirements

Nursing degree or medical assistant certification from an accredited program.
Current State of West Virginia nursing license or medical assistant certification.
CPR – BLS is required to be maintained.

Responsibilities

Prepare the patient for the medical visit upon arrival to the scheduled appointment
Escort the patient to the exam room.
Obtain/update and record all vital signs, including height/weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respirations.
Record chief complaint
Update medication list
Update allergy status
Assess self-management capacity/goal attainment
Update or obtain health history.
Document care in the medical record.
Update children’s immunization records in the state system.
Appropriately administer medications and treatments in accordance with provider order or standing protocols.
Double check medication and dosages with a licensed provider prior to administration to patient.
Administer: SC injections, IM injections, Eye drops, Pediatric immunizations, Adult immunizations, Allergy serum, PPD, Oral mediations, Nebulizer treatments
Collect: Throat, Wound, Stool, Urine, Sputum cultures
Locate and use equipment required for providing patient care.
Check oxygen tank and AED daily.
Restock emergency cart after use in an emergency situation, or if the lock has been compromised.
Perform standing orders for screening tests per clinic policy.
Update electronic health record: Scan laboratory, radiology, and other medical results into patient’s record, Send scanned documents to providers for review by the provider.
Maintain record order
Assist providers in maintaining and updating medical records
Perform ear irrigations.
Perform urine drug screens.
Follow sterile instrument processing protocol by properly cleaning and disinfecting equipment packaging appropriately.
Check for outdated instruments.
Check for expired medications.
Answer patient telephone calls.
Evaluate and triage telephone calls and give clinical advice to patients as instructed by the licensed provider.
Call in prescription medications as instructed by the licensed provider.
Set up nebulizer when ordered by provider and instruct patient on appropriate use.
Perform vision testing.
Perform audiometry testing.
Prepare patient for examination by provider, assist with undressing, gowning, and set up of supplies/equipment needed for the examination.
Assist provider during and after examination.
Perform phlebotomy: Venipuncture, Finger-sticks
Prepare specimens for reference lab collection.
Review lab order in computer and type lab requisition
Centrifuge specimens and refrigerate or store appropriately
Make slides if indicated
Enter patients data in daily log book
Lab results: Check receipt of results, Forward laboratory results to ordering provider, Contact LabCorp if labs not received in expected timeframe, Mail or fax copies of laboratory results to outside ordering provider as required
Lab environment: Stock countertop with vacutainers, needles, gauze, alcohol and tubes, Discard outdated tubes, Check refrigerator and freezer temperatures twice daily and record on log, Adjust refrigerator and freezer temperatures as required
Provide in-house laboratory tests, as appropriate.
Provide patient education.
Clean and restock examination areas, and prepare for next visit.
Replace sharps containers and biohazard bags as needed.
Protect patient privacy and confidentiality.
Promote efficient patient flow and productivity by assuring the patients’ record is complete and that all labs, radiology reports and outside records are available for the provider’s review during the visit.
Act as an active member of the patient care team and participate in morning team huddles.
Maintain licensure/certifications in good standing with the State of West Virginia through appropriate scope of practice and ethical professional standards.
Obtain the necessary continuing education requirements for license renewal.
Consistently operate within the scope of the individual applicable licensing or certification, nursing standards, and BCHA policy.
Promote an atmosphere of teamwork and a caring and helpful attitude consistent with BCHA standards and policy to promote positive relations with patients and fellow employees.
Demonstrate an understanding of BCHA’s mission and vision in performing all aspects of the position.
Work time consists of administrative duties.
Order medications and medical supplies as approved by the Director of School Based Health, Chief Medical Officer, and Director of Nursing & Quality Improvement.
Educate patients on public health issues.
Fill in at any BCHA location for nursing, medical assistant, and laboratory staff when needed.
Attend in-service trainings, team meetings, and other appropriate medical staff and health center meetings.
Work a schedule assigned by the Nurse Manager with intermittent evening, early morning, and weekend hours to accomplish the goals of the organization and its mission.
Complete other duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager, Director of Nursing & Quality Improvement, Chief Medical Officer, or Chief Executive Officer.
