About The Position

Boom is building supersonic jet engines and requires an M&P Lab Technician to play a foundational role in setting up the lab and establishing standards for world-class lab work. This is an opportunity to build the lab from the ground up in an upstart R&D environment, rather than a rote production QC role. The materials lab, including metallography, mechanical testing, and SEM, is being built concurrently with the engine program. The technician will help define prep routes, calibration systems, report templates, and sample tracking. The role involves blurring the lines between technician and engineer, contributing to test campaign planning and shaping the lab's direction, not just executing work orders. The technician will be involved in interpreting results, such as identifying defects versus prep artifacts, verifying heat treat specifications, and investigating component appearance after testing.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in a metallurgical or materials testing laboratory.
  • Strong metallographic preparation skills and microstructure evaluation experience, ideally on aerospace alloys (nickel superalloys, titanium, stainless).
  • Proficiency in hardness and microhardness testing.
  • Experience reading engineering drawings, AMS/ASTM specifications, and supplier certifications.
  • Disciplined documentation habits, preferably from an AS9100/NADCAP-type environment.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate findings directly to engineers.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State due to ITAR/EAR regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Mechanical testing experience: tensile, fatigue (LCF/HCF), creep, or elevated-temperature testing.
  • Failure analysis experience: fractography, SEM/EDS exposure, root cause investigation support.
  • Furnace survey / pyrometry (AMS 2750) experience.
  • Experience standing up or significantly upgrading a lab capability.
  • Familiarity with Statistical Process Control (SPC) and comfort with data analysis.
  • Experience on R&D, development, or test programs rather than pure production.
  • Further education or diploma in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a related field, or equivalent industry depth.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare metallurgical samples including sectioning, mounting, polishing, and etching across stainless steels, titanium, and nickel-based superalloys.
  • Perform microstructural analysis on engine components such as machined, brazed, welded, heat-treated, and thermally sprayed hardware.
  • Conduct hardness and microhardness testing, furnace uniformity surveys, and chemical/cleaning solution analysis.
  • Support mechanical test operations (tensile, fatigue, creep, elevated temperature) by assisting with specimen handling, setup, and data recording.
  • Assist M&P engineers in failure and damage investigations on hardware from Boom's engine test cell.
  • Evaluate supplier material and process certifications against engineering specifications and drawings.
  • Write traceable, complete, and defensible reports that serve as the permanent engineering record.
  • Contribute to the establishment of the lab by developing procedures, calibration systems, providing input on equipment selection, and managing consumables.
  • Support allowables and material characterization test programs as they are initiated.
  • Write procedures when they do not exist, with guidance from materials scientists and engineers.
  • Generate data that drives material decisions on an engine program.
